I have a 96 Class A 30ft with air bag in the suspension. With a 47" wide by 8 ft platform on the back that will hold 1200 lbs. Platform supports whichΒ  are 4 ft receiver hitch tubes weld to the frame of the Class A. Now to put the Ural rig on the platform l need to add some length to the platform which is about 28" and then the total length of he RV will be 37 ft long instead of 30ft. This is a single axle rear with a 455 motor and l don't have a trailer to pull the Ural rig.Β  My question or your opinions would you just buy a trailer or add the length to the platform. I am heading out west with this RV.Β  Your thoughts on this.

Pusher or front engine?Β  If it's a pusher, I would be very concerned about cantilever forces lightening the front end.Β  Adding a trailer is always a simpler option and avoids getting high-centered in the MANY troublesome driveways and parking lots that exist in the world.

FWIW I have a trailer that is more than adequate for your needs that I am willing to let go really cheap.Β  Could even meet for delivery.Β

I travelled all over out West with my Rig, but I bought a gooseneck horse trailer with LQ.

If it could haul horses, it can haul a bike. Β Never had a problem, and glad I designed it that way.

Good Luck with yours and Enjoy the West!

My first thought is overloading the rear axle/tires.Β  That is quite a long lever.Β  While static may be okay, but traveling over rough/undulating roads the weight swing can be pretty substantial (like 2Gs substantial when not on the bumpstops).Β Β

Maybe go to a CAT Scale first to see what kind of room you have to work with.Β  Go in with your typical ready to hit the road load.Β  Then calculate the rear axle weight with 2x the weight constant at the leverage point.Β  Compare that to the rear axle GVW /Max tire load rating (lower of the two), 15% under GVW/tire load rating you may be okay.

I'd just do the trailer.Β  Mostly because if I broke on the side of the road, or got caught up in an accident it wouldn't be worth the conversation dealing with non engineered modifications to a heavy vehicle.

Hold my keyboard and watch this! πŸ™ƒ

Well, if no one else will say it.....WELCOME to the Sidecar forums,Β  Jay Hom @sunrider56.

The answer you seek is.....buy the flatbed trailer from @thane-lewis.

Seriously, Jay. Β If you want a good trailer set up specially for sidecars, take a look at mine. Β If it would work for you I’m practically giving it away and it does an admirable job, it just won’t work for my phat Albert rig.

I’m in dead center USA just off I-80. Β I had some hope based on earlier posts that you were somewhat closer. Β Sigh.

Jay, well, given that you don't want to drive 1,234 miles to save $ 2,500.00, allow me to spend more of your money, in a location much closer to you.

What you need is a BearTrack BTU76120F all aluminum trailer. https://beartracktrailers.com/product/76-wide-utility-trailer-3500/

There are several of us on these forums that own a BearTrack all aluminum trailer, and some of us have the really WIDE versions, as our sidecar rigs are that WIDE, or....PHAT.

Given that you have a Ural, you most likely only need the 76" wide version of these great trailers. That is 6' 4 " wide, and 10' long.

Have a built in folding ramp, and for the low, low cost of these trailers, there are NO other trailers that can compete with these.

Look on their website, find a dealer that is relatively close to you, and...buy one.

@miles-ladue I wanted to get this trailer for our Wing as per your information. However, the closest Bear Track dealer was 3 hours away. We got an Aluma 8214 (82"wide and 14'long ) tilt at a local dealer 20 minutes away. It is hard to find a trailer wide enough for the GW/Hannigan! Maiden voyage to the Maine Rally πŸ™‚

Oh No.... you bought an Aluma trailer? You will be the outcast of the entire Sidecar Rally.

Oh, the Humanity !

And....14 feet long..... how will you survive with such a long trailer ?

Shocked

And...And ...the BearTrack trailer that I bought was a 3 hour drive from my house, then 3 hour drive back home. But it was well worth it.

Sweaty
