Fixed the 'Thumbs up' button!

Many months ago Miles suggested to me in a PM that he wished the 'thumbs up' button was simpler to use. He said there really wasn't a need for a 'thumbs down' button so why not just have one?
I have thought about that a few times but that is just not an option among the hundreds of options in all the menus for this beast. But I have learned a lot over the months (it never stops!) and I know when, where, and how to ask better questions in the support community.
So after this came up several days ago I went and asked the question - can this be done? And I got an answer! The answer is not in the options but in code - which is what I thought and originally put me off. But this person included the CSS code in his response. It is pretty simple but also quite cryptic. I tested it and it works!
So now we have a single gray button that you can click on and it turns green for you! Test it out!
You're welcome!

Works perfect. Thanks Jerry. 🍻

FM, this issue is due to a number of different factors. The first thing to consider is the position of your wrist in making contact with the button. Try various angles and force of your clicks. See if that makes a difference in the button's response. Please post here in detail about your experimentations.
The second thing to consider is the level of support provided to the Webmaster's Benefit Fund. The level of support for the Fund is based on the number of words submitted to the forum. I see in the account that you are way underfunded for the number of words compared to others. Lack of button performance is directly tied to the level of Fund support.
Lastly, I suspect some local issue like cookies or caching on your end. Barring observations from others with similar experiences that generally points to a problem in your local environment.
I would offer, only for you, that I could come to your place for a personal consultation to fix this problem, guaranteed, and completely free of charge. Consider the value I could bring to your peace of mind just for the small consideration of the airfare to Scotland. I wouldn't do this for anyone else!
Very respectfully,

When I click the button once the thumbs up goes dark blue. Interestingly it notes a person named "You reacted" has clicked the button. I was expecting it to show "sheath reacted".
I'll be here all week... Try the veal.

Over on the Happy Holiday's thread I clicked the like button and it went blue but didn't record "you reacted" so I clicked it again and then it fully recorded the "like".

You are not going to like my answer. IT DEPENDS! This is a localized experience that depends on a lot of factors but the website is performing as it should. It has a service that responds quickly and specifically to clicks. IOW, with most changes you have to click 'submit' or otherwise refresh the page, but with this service/technology (AJAX) if you click the button it changes immediately without having to refresh the page.
BUT it depends on your browser, device, operating system, and the stars lining up whether it changes the thumb for you in the way you want/expect. If you click once and it turns blue and says 'you' reacted you are golden and everything is working (it is smart enough to know YOU reacted without having to repeat your name). But if you have to click twice or 3 times then something is delaying or denying that change so you have to convince it to behave with repeated actions.
I am terribly sorry about the extra wear on your mouse and I hope your finger recovers from the strain. But with all of the incredible challenges you all have endured (recently and before my time) if this is the level of concern about the website I am thrilled you all are focusing on this!

As a follow-up, I can tell you all, and specifically tell Jerry, our Webmaster, that the "problem" with the Thumbs Up has NOT been fixed, it is NOT an individual user end problem, it is NOT an issue of how many cookies one has open, or has eaten.
I have taken the time to watch, to test, to experiment, and I can say with 100% certainty that the problem IS within the coding of the website.
What evidence do I provide to back up my claim?
First, let's look at what the problem ism and why so many of you....(you know whats)....have either not noticed it, don't give a hoot, or are too drunk to be aware that this is in fact happening.
The issue is: The majority of the time that any of us clicks on the grey thumbs up icon to LIKE someone's post, that grey thumbs up will turn Blue....BUT...it does not always indicate that YOU, or your user name has liked the post.
Example: A post by Thane....and he already has a like posted by sheath (Scott). If anyone else clicks on that grey thumbs up, the grey thumbs up will indeed turn Blue, but....did you notice if YOUR user name now appeared next to sheath ? Did you notice that the user name sheath has now DISAPPEARED. Did you notice that YOUR user name now appears as a like, but that the user name sheath is gone ?
The immediate FIX for all of us, is that IF the grey thumbs up doesn't turn to Blue..AND show your user name there...AND....hasn't made other user names that previously liked that post DISAPPEAR...then you need to click on that thumbs up 2 more times.
Seriously...the vast majority of the time it takes a total of three (3) clicks on that grey thumbs up to :
# 1: turn the grey thumbs up to Blue...but no user name appeared, or previous user names that liked that post have disappeared.
# 2: to turn the thumbs up grey again
# 3: to turn the grey thumbs up Blue again, and NOW your user name appears as a like, and all previous user names that liked that post reappear.
This testing was done on 3 individual devices that I own...a Motorola smart phone (allegedly smart), a Samsung tablet, and a HP desktop computer.
Then, it was tested on my wife's HP desktop computer, a MUCH newer version that any of my stuff.
Then it was tested on my (alleged) smart phone, and Samsung tablet, in Germany, in the Netherlands, in Scotland, at different hotels and my flat on Loch Ness, and it still performed the same as before, with all the problems.
But wait, Jerry, there's more.
THEN, today, it was performed on my brand new, out of the box, Lenovo All-In-One 27" desktop computer, with Windows 11....and it still does the same thing.
Not enough evidence yet ?
Okay, I have notices up in the corner when I sign on, that user X LIKED my post, or that user Y LIKED my post.....but when I go to view the post they liked, it shows user X as being there, but not user Y, or...visa versa.
There are forum members that have raised a stink about other forum members not showing their appreciation for posts, by not posting a LIKE to a post they read, and yet that same forum member that raised that stink....RARELY has his user name showing up as a LIKE, because...he has not noticed that it "generally" takes 3 clicks on the thumbs up icon to make it fully showing. He thinks he has LIKED a post, but his LIKE doesn't register.
Other forum members have said things, most just let it pass...some people just ignore MY notices of things like this, because they think I am too gregarious (yeah, let's be polite and use that word), as others would use different words to describe me.
THEE issue isn't that the LIKE thumbs up isn't working properly, THEE issue is that there IS a glitch in the coding, and needs to be rectified.
If my sidecar rig has a left rear turnsignal light that is not working...I don't ignore it, and just use hand signals.
I am asking....will you please fix this, and stop assuming that the problem is user related ?

Clicked once and it said you reacted?
Other than that my head hurts.

I can concur that a fairly random assortment of events occur when the thumbs up is activated. All of the above that Miles detailed are accurate. If I notice that it doesn't say "you reacted" I will click twice again and I get the proper message. And about half of the time everyone else's reactions disappear and half the time they do not.
Unfortunately, my expectations of the functioning of software have dwindled to a point that if a system is even remotely functional I shrug and accept what is. If a site is completely non functional I abandon it and spend my time elsewhere. sigh.

Sir Thane....I concur with your wisdom, and chosen paths of acceptance of things WE cannot change. The very definition of Serenity.
BTW, it took 3 clicks to properly post a LIKE to your post above.

OK it took three that time.

Does it make any difference which browser you use?
I use firefox on an old acer laptop with windows 10, and haven't had any issues with the thumbs up button for quite a long time. The Android cell phone needs to be turned to landscape for the thumbs up icon to be located in a selectable spot, using the chrome browser. Pretty sure that is an issue specific to the screen on this phone though.

No difference. Firefox or Chrome in Mac OS all do the same thing. I don't get on the site on my tablet so can't speak to that question. The fact that Miles has the same thing happen on several platforms says it's an application thing, not a user thing.
