Heidenau P29 5.00-16 and other car tires
It's been a while since I've looked at discussions about car tires on the rear of a GL1500, so I thought I would raise the topic again in case there was new information. I'm going to need a new rear on my '89 GL with Hannigan sidecar soon, and I'd like to make the interval between now and the next change as long as possible.
I found the Heidenau P29 5.00-16 classic car tire on line and wondered if anyone had tried this tire on the rear of a GL1500 with 16 inch rim. The price I've found is $278, so it looks like it would only be a good option if someone has established it gets substantially better mileage than a motorcycle tire, which cost about the same.
I know the Austone Taxi Tire used to be an option. However, past discussions have indicated the increased size of this tire means it won't physically fit in the swing arm of the GL1500.
If anyone has found an econimical tire mileage-wise for the rear of the GL1500, I'd love to hear about it.
FYI, I have over 12,000 miles on the Dunlop Elite 4 that's on the rear now, and it's not completely used up. However, I hesitate to take off on the several thousand mile trip that I have planned for spring with this tire.
Thanks for any info you might be able to share.
There is a facebook group called Darkside riders that is dedicated to running car tires. Check there for a lot of opinions and info. Also, Woody's wheels in Denver. They have a website and are a good source of info on all things wheels and tires. They ship world wide.

It is not correct. Austone Taxi Tire fit perfect in GL1500. I have it on my bike. Problem it is hard to find.
For those with 17" rims (BMW R1150's etc), might give Nokian Hakkapelitta a try I've used both the R10 studded and R5 non studded and was dead impressed with both, though R5 in a 175 section was crazy tight fit to the swing arm.
Thank you for that recommendation, Guy! that's exactly the kind of experience and advice we need - real world and practical!
Keep up the good work! Oh, and you're now free to post without moderation!
Illegitemi non carborundum est!
Those winter treads look great.
Not looking right now.
But it would be interesting to see if they would ship a batch down under.
Not much snow here so not a normally available tire.
And it's been a while since a 175/17 has been available here.
