What do you all think about a 3D printer sidecar?  Watch the attached video, ask your questions, make your comments heard.

Oh, Oh, Oh....Scott @sheath will love this sidecar, because it is YELLOW, or...most of it is yellow. The odd bits are grey, like the matter inside his head.

Grey matter, get it?

On theeeeee subject, I can't see any difference in doing a 3D printed sidecar "body" vs doing a fiberglass or metal body.

All the bits required to attach the sidecar to the motorcycle are going to be the same as we currently utilize.

To do a 3D printed body, you need to either own a 3D printer, or pay someone else to make the sidecar body for you, as they own, or control the 3D printer.

Ergo, I have to ask...what is the point in making the sidecar "body" with the 3D printer ?

Other than the fact that it is kewl Razz

I'm amazed at how fast 3D printing has scaled up from little bit parts to projects this size (and even buildings).

If it can remain accessible to small shops and at home workshops, it would make for a wave of innovation. 3D printing allows rapid prototyping and an easy way to offer options.

Even if you have to outsource the printing to another shop, it has the potential to be more cost effective than hand building each prototype.  It will eventually be fast and cheap enough to replace hand layup altogether.

As for the connecting bits not changing,  they are already experimenting with a variety of materials for 3D printing.  It won't be long before something as strong as steel tubing is available.

Then think how easy it would be to build a subframe for any bike.  Scan in the engine pictures, draw the subframe you want, hit print.

We'll see.

Yellow for the win!  😍

🤣

This look fits perfectly with the new R1300GSA.  Maybe they could pitch it to BMW.  👍

I like the use of alternative materials.

Not understanding the limitations of 3D printing, I would have throught they could design and make something more along the lines of a modern French aerodynamic sidecar.

With the right CAD skills and printer, they could have printed an entire Uni-Body chassis.

Maybe this is a proof of concept? Or they are "Lego fans."

Here is a video showing the sidecar construction a bit better.

A new friend. And proving to be a true friend. Is drafting some triple trees this weeks for me.

Hope to see the plans Friday.

Then he is going to 3D print the patterns so we can cast them.

Would that be hybrid printing???

Just a touch excited about it.

The best reason in the world. Because he can. Many things we do are just to do it. And after it is done find a reason that fits. Projects like this of then lead no where.

But some times they spark news was of thinking.

Did a little work with a military branch 3D printing with Titanium... could make exceptionally strong and light parts.  Don't ask about the cost, though! Head Explody

Ah...Dane @ben-franklin, I do believe that the work...like that...that you did for the government, was NOT supposed to be talked about.

<a href=" removed link " target="_blank" rel="noopener">Hello,
I'm Marco and I'm the developer of the 3D printed sidecar. Unfortunately I can't post any pictures here yet and I could write books about my work over the last few years 🙂
In any case, thank you very much for your feedback. I started a Kickstarter campaign a few days ago. Here you can see more about my work and the development of my sidecars. Maybe one or the other would like to support me or help me with words and deeds.
As soon as it is possible I would also post pictures. You are also welcome to ask me your questions.
P.s. The sidecar in the video was only developed by me for the Formnext trade fair in Frankfurt and was only made fit for the road shortly before the end of the project in order to ride test kilometers with it.

Best regards to all

Not sure why the forum software nuked Marco's link.  Maybe because he's a noob?

Let's see if it nukes the link when a "prominent member" posts it.  Here goes --->

Correct! New users require two moderated posts before they can post pics or links. Sorry for the inconvenience but that means safety for the rest of us.

Marco -

I checked out your kickstarter and liked the pictures of the process.  Any longer videos of the build?
