Helmet clips Micro or D ring
Morning guys an gals
My new helmet has a D ring fitted and i am wondering about the micro clip type as they are much easier to use, my D ring is pretty close to the left hand side of the helmet but i will use for awhile before i decide. Have you changed then over and what do you think ?
Making an assumption here that as long as you do not cut the strap in any was it will not effect your motorcycle insurance?

I have added the clip type fasteners to two of my wife's helmets and they add on to the existing strap. Never had anyone question how the helmets fasten before so I can't speak to that.
I assume something like this is what you have in mind? If so, they seem to use the un-modified straps which is a good thing.

Steve already knows my thoughts on this, as we emailed about it earlier. I cut off the D rings, no damage to the web strapping, then install one of the clip style fasteners on every helmet I have used for the past 50 years.
It will have NO affect on your insurance. Besides, with a sidecar rig, there is very little chance of your helmet making contact with the grill of a 1949 Mack truck.

Great topic of discussion! 👍
All the Arai helmets I've had/have use a very short strap on the D-ring side. It is a pita with gloves on, but I've gotten used to it over the years. The Bell and Shoei helmets I've had/have utilize a longer strap on the D-ring side which is much easier to use. Still I'd like to try the "clip" style when it's time for a new helmet. I've seen a few with them installed by the oem. But I'm really looking forward to a European market ECE 22.06 helmet, and haven't started looking at them yet.
No idea how installing a clip fastener would effect insurance. Probably best to contact someone at your agency who is an actual rider, and understands what you are looking to do. Interesting "Question and Answer" on this web page as to DOT "approved". https://www.helmetshop.com/HELMET-QUICK-RELEASE_p_8.html
The Klim Krios Pro uses a magnetic buckle assembly which is interesting. Kind of snaps itself in place, and uses a red pull tab to unbuckle. https://www.klim.com/Krios-Pro-Helmet-ECE-DOT-3610-000
Arai XD4 short strap. Makes it really tough with gloves, and even more of a pita to snap the end of the strap back. It doesn't look like Arai has changed this for the XD5 (it's part of their philosophy on safety).
Bell Moto 9 Flex with longer strap and magnet (red diamond shaped piece) to hold the strap end looped back. Much easier to deal with, but the magnet wants to attach to anything it can.

The ECHO helmet chin strap buckle.
This is the exact one I have been buying and using for decades. It's simple....it works !
I strongly suggest that you NOT mention this to your insurance company, or ask them, simply because insurance companies today will look for any and every excuse to raise your rates....for no reason.
I am TELLING you.....this helmet chin strap fastener will NOT affect your helmet worthiness or abilities. Listen to the olde man on this one.

The coverage is the same wether riding nude or riding full ATGATT.
I can tell you, from experience, that as a member of the NANMRA, we were still required to wear a helmet, if the state we were riding in required the wearing of helmets.

@ned Thank Goodness I thought I was going to have to give up riding nude there for a moment. 🤣

Thou may quip, and thou may chuckle, butt (pun intended) the NANMRA is a real thing. (or was...a real thing)
We would use the 6.9 miles between Empire, Nevada and Gerlach, Nevada as the qualifying route. The rider was allowed to wear their helmet, and boots, and had to start in Empire, Nevada, and ride the scant (as in scantily clad) miles to Gerlach, Nevada, where a cheering crowd of onlookers was awaiting their arrival. Best done on dry days.
