Hmmm. Should I re-think lead as ballast?

My sidecar came with 50 pounds of lead ingots. I just put them in some silver thermal type shipping bags my medicine comes in.
I was just looking for more lead so I could get rid of the 60 pound bag of concrete that is making a mess. But It just dawned on me I may not want to use lead at all because of my dog? Do I dare use it if I say taped it up in a heavy duty contractor trash bag?
I'm also considering window weights. What are you guys using? Thanks

Cal-Vin.... Caretaker of Sidecar Willie, I believe that if you wrap up any of the "weight" in heavy duty contractor trash bags, taped up, that should not be hazardous to Sidecar Willie.
Keep any additional weight out as far RIGHT in the Sidecar as you can.
On all of my Goldwing Sidecar rigs, I have zero chance of flying the chair, but I understand the issue with your rig.

Lead won't be an issue as long as it's covered. Duct tape on top of it would also work.

This guy just replied back to me. I can get 18 window weights for $10. Think I might grab these too. I think they will lay in the little cargo compartment behind the seat.
I wonder if cast iron weight more than concrete?

If you plan to pass through the border from Mexico back into the U.S., you probably don't want to wrap up the lead shot to look like this. You might have some "splainin' to do". 😉
Side note: Two 25 lbs bags of lead shot wrapped up in a thick plastic, and taped securely. that fit nicely under the seat. Super-Muttress never complained. Nor did she grow a third eye, or any other weirdness, since it was in a place she couldn't get to. My buddy who did a six hour round trip ride with me, said it got a bit uncomfortable on the way home. So when he's onboard the lead gets swapped out for seat foam. 👍

Silicates < Iron < Lead in terms of density. Iron's density is 7.8 g/cm3 where lead is over 11.

I do think.....I say, I do think....you are overthinking this.
50 lbs of Sand = 50 lbs of Iron = 50 lbs of Lead
On the other hand, 50 lbs of Gold equals a LOT of brand new, and a few Antique.... Sidecar Rigs

I have a very small place for said weight. So, ummm. What takes up more space? A 50 pound box of lead or a 50 pound box of feathers,,,,lol.

Feathers are better for flying the chair???
Er...

- Two five gallon soft jugs of water. Easy to empty if adding car rider.
- Jack stands and large extinguisher in duffle on floor.
- Extensive tool kit. If I used it when I mounted the car it was added to the tool roll.
- Drag Specialties rack duffle with wet gear, first aid kit and Ryobi air compressor.
- If it sounds like a lot there’s also 40 lb six pack cooler bag of gravel.
- I don’t carry anyone in car. Dog doesn’t like the open air stuff. Great house dog. Outside world is a scary place.
- But the not-wife loves to ride. On the pillion. Riding in this car is very low. Left view is my hip. Right side is lug level with 18 wheelers.

Whoa, Whoa, Whoa...Mr. I ride on the Left Side of the Road.....the real sensible suggestion is...build the sidecar rig correctly in the first place, and you never have to worry about Flying the Chair.
The only rig of mine, out of 7 sidecar rigs in 6 years, was the ONE week that I owned a Triumph Rocket lll that had too small of a sidecar attached to it, and had NO trail reduction on the front end of the bike, so in ONE parking lot sharp turn, I flew the chair...one time. After that, still on my way home after just having bought this rig, I was looking for roadkill on the side of the roadways, even a 3 week olde dead body would have been worth stopping for, as I could have held my breathe for miles, and miles...and miles.
Got that rig home, and sold it immediately, as it was an untamed beast that was not put together as well as I was told it had been.
But my other 6 sidecar rigs...not a single one of them fly the chair....because they have, or had the correct size sidecar attached to the motorcycle, well assembled, trail reduction, etc. I have never felt the need to carry additional weight in any of those 6 sidecars, and....boxes or bags of donut holes don't count as added weight, until you eat them.

You're full of it! Donut holes that is,,,lol.
I guess size matters. Did any of your sidecar frames have this label on it?
