Shocks for the EV / Velorex Hack...?

I need an edu-ma-cation regarding shock sag and all that on a Hack.

The fellow that helped me with the set up on the EV / Velorex 565 rig informed me that the shocks should only sag about 3/4" when I get on the machine.

Well that is fine however, it makes for a Hell of a stiff ride especially here in Maine in the Frost Heaved Spring with the stock Guzzi items...!

Can I go with a longer shock with no issues...?

Should I...?

Will I get a decent ride and retain decent handling if I go with longer shocks...?

How much longer would be good...? ( Stock length is 13" eye to eye... )

Thanks,

Rob

Hey Rob,

You may want to take the advice of a true expert, I'm a hack when it comes to hacks!

I plan to try an air shock on my sidecar. My tug is a GL1100 Goldwing and it just so happens that the GL shocks fit the hack too. I'm a few weeks from taking 'er on the road, but I do plan to post my findings.

Give Progressive Suspension tech line a call for shocks with heavierspring rates.

Rob, I backed shocks down a notch to 1+inch of sag on the Sportster rig and the ride is better. Works OK for my usual passenger, Maddie the 45 lb dog, but it is necessary re-set all 3 shocks if I ride an adult passenger for more than a neighborhood tour.

Also, we've had really good service and results re: shocks and springs with Dave Gardner at www.ikonsuspensionusa.com and/or ikonusa@gmail.com, including a couple of non-stock fabrications.

Guys like to run Harley air shocks on the EV, If I remember correctly, all you have to do is ream the bushing a tiny bit. Check over at www.wildgoose.com. Someone over there will be able to tell you exactly which ones to use. I'm thinking they were 99 Roadking, but I could be wrong. I had a set of free take offs from a local chopper shop, but my kid put them on his Goldwing.

I've got a set of nice take-off Harley Chrome 13 1/2" shocks. Had a short lady client who wanted 12"ers installed so it was easier for her to mount up.
I'll take $60.00 for the pair + shpg.

Lonnie,

Are they adjustable for damping and rebound...? How about the springs, heavier than the stock Guzzi EV coils...? I can measure the ones I have if that will help.

These are not air shocks are they...? I may have an old biased about air shocks as they Used to be prone to blowing out.... prolly not the case now huh...?

Well for 60+ bux I could try those before spending much more on longer shocks.

Speaking of which, what would that do to the dynamic of the rig, I thought about installing 14-3/8" long shocks vs the stock 13-1/2"...

Thoughts...?

Thanks,

Rob

The Harley springs have 1" adjustable ride height. 3 resistance settings.
