Hi, thanks for allowing me to join your forum. I am a 80 year old retired mechanical engineer located in Ireland. I recently purchased a BMW R1150r. At my age solo riding is a bit of a challenge. I decided to attach a Velorex (modified) chair to stick the missus into. Would anyone have photos, sketches etc of a suitable subframe, and attachment points. I can make the subframe as I have fabrication experience and facilties. Trying to find info or a ready made subframe in Ireland is like trying to get my arm back from a crocodile. Thanks for any help you can provide. Kind regards, joe.Β

Welcome, Joe! Β As challenging as it is to locate information and resources for sidecars in the US, I can only imagine how much more that must be in Ireland with about 15 percent of the population of the US.

there are archives here with information about a variety of builds. Β Some are searchable, some are not (changing platforms will do that). Β Several US builders have plans for subframes, etc. and equipment occasionally comes up for sale. Β Getting it to you might add a bit of challenge to the process.

In any case, don’t be discouraged, there will be some helpful folks along in a bit to point you in a good direction.

Welcome Joe. No need for thanks as they set the bar really low here.

In Australia here we can help with a crocodile!Β

Put a sidecar on a 650 Suzuki vStrom years ago without a subframe then again a few years later on the same machine with a subframe.

That's a beam framed bike with no lower framework at all.

Without, involved laying on the floor and looking up at the available bolting points.

Then working through the issues.

The hard part is getting up again.

With a subframe was easier.

You shouldn't have to much trouble working it out.

Access to DOM tube? (Drawn over mandrel)

Or equivalent?Β

Not an easy option here but should be better in Europe.Β

Hopefully you will find some pictures soon for guidance.Β

Perhaps some inmates here have some?

Joseph,Β  or....Joe, now that the crocodile has taken your arm,Β  and being Irish we hope it wasn't your dart throwing arm, or your Guinness drinking arm...

We have a guy on the far away side of this country,Β  way across the pond, his name is Chuck, on here he is @54vintage , and he is our master fabrication man,Β  making subframes for bikes exactly like your BMW R1150R. He might be able to offer information,Β  advice, tutorial, etc. I happen to have his email address,Β  if he doesn't speak up here.

BTW, I will be in the Land of Ire either later this year for 2 months,Β  or this same time next year for 2 months,Β  so....tell me which pub you want to meet at, and I shall be there.Β

I'm in Germany right now,Β  awaiting the arrival of one of my sidecar rigs,Β  as I had it shipped over from the US.Β

Oh, andΒ  WELCOMEΒ  to the sidecar forums.Β  You sound like a "good fellow "

Cool

Thanks guys, I'm not sure how these forums work or how I reply to you, individually or collectively? Anyway I'll give it a shot. I did manage to get a "worms eye view" of the bike. Seems suitable attachment points are pretty scarce. There are one or two on the crankcase where the main stand attaches to, but I'm not sure if what I suspect is a ally die casting, is structurally up to the task. (I'd hate to be one day staring in at the crank spinning around) Upper attachment point possibilities are equally as scarce as hens teeth. Attaching the sidecar on the left side of the bike to comply with Irish /UK law I suspect will be different than attaching to the right side of the bike. Re "they set the bar really low here", sounds like my wife the day we got married! The Priest asked her, "do you take this man to be your lawful husband", she replied "I suppose so, he's better than nowt". BTW, I'm in Galway, the Huntsman pub is my local. Any "magic" solution bar velcro to attach the box will be great😂

I had an R1150gs that I mounted a subframe onto with expectation of adding a car to the bike (until the engine ate a cam chain guide and the bike went away in many, many pieces).Β  Assuming that there is a center stand on the bike, the lower rear mount goes through the bolt that holds the center stand in place (VERY long bolt).Β  The front mounts are set up using engine studs and the upper rear is set up on the rear subframe.Β  Overall it's not a complex setup but does require changes to the plastics and reduces the amount of right leg room.

Thanks Thane, there is a casting lug around 4 inches wide with a 12mm hole running through it at the front of the crankcase. It's probably a tooling lug for locating the casting during machining. That along with the centre stand bolt location may be useful to attach a subframe. I'll have a proper look again and remove the plastics, seats etc. BTW,Β  does "illiegitemi non corborundom est" mean "don't let the b_____ds wear you down"?. 😂

I've been trying to play a G banjo for the past 30 years. I may as well have been hitting a cows arse with it 😁

I'm back in the workshop looking up at the crankcase puzzled. My cat is on the windowsill looking at me with a grim on her face as though I'm stupid. She is like the missus that thinks I should be doing something sensible like down at the pub having a pint with the rest of the geriatrics around here. I'm also trying to restore a MG TD which she also reckons is a waste of time. She is still sulking because I bought her a an impact wrench for her birthday! You just can't please women.Β

And may IΒ  inquire....what year is this MG TD ?

Somewhere around here I have pictures of my 1957 Moggie......Morris Minor 1000 Salon Deluxe, with replacement 1,098cc engine,Β  and dual SUΒ  carbs.Β
