I'm looking for my first bike and sidecar combo.
I did as much searching on this forum as I could but couldn't find anything.
I need to find a set up that will give me an EASY cruising speed of 75mph.

I'm looking to spend under 15k on the combo. (Under 10k would be better)

What have you guys found that works the best at these speeds?

I just want to add that I love the look of the Royal Enfield and the Ural T, but they don't have the power I'm looking for.

I wouldn't even consider anything under 1000cc if you want that.

I've had a dozen different rigs and the only ones that would do that kind of speed all day long were a 1200cc Goldwing with a little HitchHiker, a Valkyrie with a Ural, and a GL1500 Goldwing with most anything.

Yea, that's what I thought. None of my current bikes would be able to handle a side car and do those cruising speeds. Thanks for the info. I'm looking at the suzuki c90 and m90 bikes, they should have enough power for me

I haven't seen it, but a friend mentioned that West Side Honda in Evansville, IN has a 1500 Goldwing rig for sale. I think the price was something like $13,000. I love my 1500, and even though I hate interstates, it has no problem doing interstate speeds all day long.

With our Gold Wing 1500/Champion Escort last summer towing the 600 lb. camper and wife, little dog in sidecar we pulled onto I-5 in Washington headed south to Portland. The temperature was 95 and to keep up with all that traffic, I set the cruise at 75. It never overheated or complained in any way. I know there are good sidecar tugs out there but I'm very happy with mine. Ralf

My K1200lt/Hannigan does just fine. Also,my wifes 650 Burgman/bullet car will handle freeway speeds just fine. J.R.

This weekend 800 mi. trip 70 mph most of the way.

Hi:
I have a VTX1300/hannigan. It can handle the speeds, but if you are looking for a more cushy ride, the 1500 or 1800 goldwings would do nicely. 🙂

I hate freeways - congested, too straight, and BORING - but sometimes it's the only road available. :^( .... There is a correlation between speed and getting to the gas station quicker. LOL

Good Luck with your quest - Ride safe.

For a rig that will run the superslab (Froever) with a small investment it's hard to beat a 1983 GL 1100 for a tug.
Many owners of later model Harley Touring rigs and GL 1500 owners still say their old 1983 GL1100 was the best bike they ever had.
Reasonably priced, change out the timing belts after 50K and they're good for the next 50K, just add gas (and maybe a tire or two).
Another plus is that you can change sparkplugs in minutes instead of hours.

Interesting. Several dedicated Goldwing riders have told me the GL 1100 was their favorite among the various 1000--1500models.

Another nice thing about the GL1100 is that there isn't a whole lota plastic to cut through or discard to mount up your hack.

I just mounted my sidecar to a GL1500. It only required one 3/4 inch hole in the front lower fairing. That, and removing the right hand hold from the seat, are the only modifications to the bodywork.
