Battery Capacity Doubled

No idea for sure but I tend to agree with Scott. Could be that the RIII charging system might overcharge the battery, not a good thing. I do have that nice big seat for some protection though.
ย

That would explain why some of the cheaper (less well engineered) Li-Ion batteries suddenly burst into flame and spread throughout the battery array.ย
Illegitemi non carborundum est!

This could be a huge benefit for Dane (@ben-franklin).ย He could form them into a shaped charge under the seat.ย Add ejection rails, and a switch on the dash. That would take care of passengers who shouldn't be passengers.
For the sheer fun of it, maybe the dash switch could activate a little LED count down timer.ย
It's even back lit for those epic night time desert explorations!

Got back into the garage, yesterday, and finished putting things back right.
Didn't shoot pics, but decided to repair the ABS sensor vs. replace; $150 new sensor stays on the shelf...ย Ended up being a simple soldered wire splice on some 22 awg wire.ย Then layered 3 layers of heatshrink over it and re routed it behind the DCT manual brake cable for a little more protection from future tire debacles.
DCT manual brake cable also lost a layer of plastic sheathing over the steel sleeve.ย Took the parking brake caliper off, cleaned and lubed everything, including cable, applied a couple layers of heat shrink over the exposed sheathing, and adjusted to specs.
Even got so excited that I took Black Betty (that sweet girl) out into the driveway and washed her, a highly infrequent event.ย
Should stay clean for about one ride!

Looking good! 😎ย
Great idea to tuck the sensor lead behind the brake cable.ย Honda should have considered something like that from the get-go.

Well Friends,
Today represents my acceptance of the fact that Mitas E07 Dakar tires' sidewalls maybe be tough and reinforced with extra belts, but they are not impenetrable, as demonstrated in the ride described in prior posts.
I suppose the Ural solution of one wheel that fits all three locations is a great answer, but would be some serious bucks and re-engineering on the AT rig, where all three wheels have vastly different hubs/brakes, etc.
So... I decided that since I did manage to spec one tire size into the mix when ordering the rig, I should at least rig a way to carry a spare tire (not around my waist, thankyouverymuch!)
I might not like it, but if I had to swap a tire in the field from any of the three locations, I could. I carry tire levers and Motion Pro bead breakers that I have used quite a few times over the past half dozen years. I think it would beat walking from an area with no cell service.
Design criterea:
1. Secure
2. Seal both sides of the tire for minimal dirt/water storage.
3. Cheap; use stuff in the garage, mostly.
4. No ugglier than necessary.
5. Minimal interference with trunk access
6. Minimal additional wind drag. So, here is what I came up with:
I had the sheet of 1/8" diamond plate for various projects; maybe a potential nose shield, at some point. Decided to reallocate it to this project.
Dense foam floor cushion was trash picked when a neighbor put a bunch of them out for bulk pickup.
Yeah, had to actually buy the 4 clothes line hooks. Left them kinda long, may put a coupling nut on one or two of them to thread an off-road flag mount on for those dirty trips where it might be nice if friends got an earlier notice that I had stopped just over a hill that they are about to sail over.
Total investment was $17.00. Guess it will work until I come up with something better. Don't be surprised if you see it in pictures over the next few years, though!

Uhhhhh......helllllooooo.......why notย just stash that spare tire inside theย sidecar,ย under the saggingย tonneauย cover, as a way to support theย tonneauย cover fromย inside,ย and lift theย tonneauย cover fromย insideย ?
I mean,ย we all knowย you haveย gottenย over picking upย 70 year olde red headed bar flies and giving them aย ride in yourย sidecar .

I like that you cut the aluminum large enough so it doesn't sandwich the bead, making it hard to seat.ย Nice work! 😎ย
Maybe a cover like this will complete the ensemble:

Scott, that cover you propose defeats the true purpose of Dane adding that aluminum plate to hold his tire in place.
His true purpose is that riding around southern Arizona, even in October, where it STILL gets to over 100*, he can use that aluminum plate as a heat source, to warm up his gas station burritos, or...to cook a few dozen eggs at a campout, or to send light reflection signals from high mountain tops to the low valley, to say...I've fallen, and can't get up.
