When all else fails..get the one you really wanted
As some of you know, I have an old, smaller displacement bike. I saw an exact bike with a beautiful sidecar on the 'net and wanted to replicate it using my bike. Well, after buying a sidecar, waiting 3 months to get it put on, reading the Ural book on how to ride in the mean time, picking the rig up, practicing how to ride, etc. It turned out the sidecar was unfit for duty, and I returned it.
My daughters really liked riding in it and I enjoyed the experience, so I started looking for another sidecar. I then thought, 'why don't I contact the guy who built the bike I really liked and see if he will sell it to me'.
After some coercing, he agreed to sell it to me!
I just sent a deposit on this bike:

It is built by a well known custom bike shop. He is pretty busy, so it won't be ready for another 3 months. He said it needs a new top end.
Let the waiting begin
Safari doesn't play well with posting pictures, so here's a link

Great looking setup! Family Fun time!

Very nice looking rig. One of my solo bikes is a CB550 like the tug in the pic. Very wrenchable and very reliable. You'd be amazed at the number of parts you can still get from Mother Honda!
Gorgeous!!!
thanks!
I can't wait
I love the 550's. I have a '75 which I will have to sell when this one gets here (in about 4 months)
Gorgeous! Congratulations!!!

Gorgeous solo 550 you have too!! But, why sell it? With original pipes like that, you have a future museum piece.
Well, if whoever you sell it to ever mentions the word "Cafe" tell 'em the price just went up to $10k! Now mind you, I like the looks of a well done cafe. But to take a near pristine bike like that and chop it up is a crime!
OldSchool,
I might just keep it if I can figure out the financials. I have kept up the 550 in great shape, and pristine stock mufflers go for a pretty penny.
I do have some Norman Hyde 'M' bars, but those are easy to replace back to stock. I do like the 'decaffeinated' cafe style in which most everything is stock. But, you're right, I don't want it going to someone who is going to cut fenders, put pod filters, remove the speedo, etc. because it's already customized tastefully, and doing more would only cheapen the look.
Nice rig. My first street bike was a 74 550 and wish I had it today. Looks like you'll have some great times with the family.
My first rig was a Honda 305 scrambler with a trash stieb on it. Wish I had pictures, but I don't.

It's almost here!
It is being shipped on 2/10/2015.
The engine was rebuilt, the carbs refurbished, and new battery installed. I just have to break the engine in slowly, but it will be ready for the summer.
Back in the mid to late seventies, I had a friend with a 550 Honda with an engine he had warmed over a bit. He was an expert engine builder and ex professional sidecar racer.
His 550 was mated to a Watsonion, ( no light weight that), but even with all the weight, it could do 100 MPH with his wife in the hack. And this was at 4,000 plus altitude on the roads around Klamath Falls Oregon.

Wow, it's nice to know the capabilities are there but I won't be 'doing the ton' any time soon, especially with the wife as the chair monkey!
