This sounds like positive news!  Thanks for sharing.  🙂  We'll still keep our paws crossed that all goes well.  At least until well after all is good again.

First time back in a while. FM sorry bout the trip cancellation and the health issue. BTW thanks for the XMAS gift, Boss Monkey loves it! We had a cruise cancelled in September (by the cruise line) due to weather as the boat was stuck in the Bahamas and could not reach Baltimore.

Friend and I did a run over to Denver on Saturday. He’s got a little 91 Ford ranger. V6 nice little truck nothing special. Halfway there the volt gauge shoots to the top of the gauge. Overcharging. Turns out voltage regulator had failed. So we nurse the truck to Denver. Stop by an auto parts place and pick up a remanufactured alternator. I put it in the truck in the parking lot. Got it all installed everything‘s working fine. About 80 miles out of Denver, the brand new alternator fell apart. We nursed the truck into the next town. Silverthorne, three auto places on her each other. None of them have a replacement alternator on hand. Evidently this year truck has an uncommon set up. We figure out we can modify a GEN three alternator into his GEN two truck. Unfortunately we can’t figure out the wiring and it won’t charge. His son comes and picks us up and drives us to 160 miles home. Today he and I jumped in my pick up jammed back up figured out a fix. And got his truck running just after we get back onto the interstate. My truck loses third gear. But I learned something interesting. 99 GMC sierra 1500 four-wheel-drive with the 5.3 L motor will comfortably run about 4500 RPM at 68 mile an hour. So I drove it all the way home in second gear. Found a transmission. Get to pick that up this week and take my truck to the mechanic. I don’t have the space to pull the transmission and put a new one in. Luckily I have the Ural to commute back-and-forth to work on.

Dang it, Tim. When it snows in Colorado,  the  sky is  really  falling.

Your  '99 GMC, is that a  3 speed auto trans, or a 4 speed  manual  transmission ?

Looks  like  Olga is going to  shine  this week.

The transmission is a 4L 60 E. Three speed auto. They are not known to be the most durable but the truck does have 218,000 miles on it found one out of a wrecking yard for $550. So I’m gonna pick that up. Yeah when it rains it pours. Oh well at least mom’s doing better

That's actually a pretty good transmission.  I built one and ran it behind a Cummins 4BT engine with a custom torque converter built to match the 4BT power characteristics, and used an aftermarket electronic controller.  Big step up from the earlier mechanical 700R4.   the 4L60E is a 4 speed, electronically controlled with lock up torque converter.   Aftermarket is very strong with these transmissions.  My use case was a Scout 800 4x4 built for adventure travels.

What out there isn't associated with a "meme".

There are a lot of us who put this transmission into applications with great success.  We simply took the time to figure out how to make it work for us.

In any case, I hope your replacement treats you well.

Does this 4L60E have a vacuum  modulator  ? Been  many cases where the  vacuum  modulator  has  either  failed, or as simple  as the  vacuum  hose to the  modulator  has a leak, or fallen off.

Good point.  The 4L60E doesn't have a vacuum modulator.  It gets the engine load info from the engine ecu.

In the category of "Brains Stuck In Neutral":

I was just looking at the post DaveFran put in the internet hacks for sale, which included an Indian with sidecar (beautiful rig).  Reminded me of renting an Indian Chief Vintage when I was in Sturgis a couple years back.  Beautiful "bucket list" bike that ran great, sounded great, even did gravel roads great.     I had just read a book about Red Cloud the Oglala Lakota Indian Chief who kicked some major U.S. Army rump.  Thought it would be a great idea to talk to the docents at the Badlands National Park, as some of them are Oglala.  Really wanted to get their thoughts on Red Cloud.   So off I roar on the bike.  Right as I was pulling up to the guard point for the Indian Reservation on the way to the visitor center it dawned on me, that some archaic red neck (right down to the Roper boots) riding up on an "Indian" motorcycle, might not be taken kindly to.    This timing was right about the height of all the Sports team name backlash (Redskins, Braves, Tomahawk Chop, etc.).     It's amazing how much goes through a mind when it thinks death is imminent.  I looked like Johnny Winters' twin.   Just as I'm about to poop my pants the guard walks up with a huge smile, and before I can get a word of apology out of my mouth starts talking about the bike, how he's been looking to get one, and what I think of it.   Seven minutes into our great conversation I glance in the rear view mirror to see about five cars stacked up behind us.  I ask the guard if I should pull over so we can continue the conversation.   He looks back over the line of cars, and says; "Naw, they're locals, they can wait."  Pauses for a moment, laughs and waves them through.  On we talked about the bike.  He new more about the bike than a dealer sales person.

Always figured myself as a courteous, conscientious and somewhat intelligent person.   But that was surely a "Well-Dang" moment, for a whole lot of reasons.

Side note: if you are interested in non-fiction books on great leaders, The Heart of Everything That Is,  by Bob Drury is an excellent read.    Hope you got a chuckle.  Laughter is the Best of Medicine. 🙂

In my lifetime, the only people who got triggered about "cultural appropriation" were folks outside of "that particular" culture being "appropriated" and were looking to make a scene.  That said, neutral attire without attitude goes a long way to having pleasant conversations.

Still wishing both of you the best Tim!! My mother passed on Dec 27, 1966. I was home on leave. Of course that day is on my mind every year at Christmas time. But the clock keeps ticking and the day fades further into history but never forgotten.
