does anybody here have a smaller trans pully on there bike?

the older bikes had a first gear that was about 3.1 - the new ones are really really tall gearing

im thinking 29 or 30 tooth instead of the 32 tooth thats in there now

any thoughts?? lots cheaper than engine modifications...

thanks

I changed the compensator sprocket on my 2004 with one from an earlier model year. It was a couple of years ago so I don't remember the details. I think it was for an evo. I think it changed the primary ration from 1:41 to 1:5 or so. It's the easiest way on a Harley as it doesn't require any speedometer correction.

I have read some where that the easy way to chang gear ratio on a Harley was to change the clutch basket. Their or two diffrent tooth raito basket's.Rudy

the 07's have issues with the ecm with primary ratio changes - but it is less work

the reason im looking into it is that i NEED to change the )(_)&$$%^^&* belt and want to take it apart ONLY ONCE!!!

thanks

timo: I had the front pulley changed on the Sportster with very favorable results, except the speedometer is now off ~4%. But, I have always read/heard that changing the primary drive is the preferred method of re-gearing a big twin.

i always thought so too in the past

but now what happens is that the ecm gets confused, the 6th gear light does not work and other software issues can arise

there are very few options on 07 on primary gearing....

but if i could do the reduction in the compensator i would - trans sprockets are avail in several sizes 29, 30, 31, 32, 34

Sorry, timo -- My only experience is with our old-tech carbureted rigid-mount Sportster.

i had a sidecar on my 79 sporsters for two years - hd listed small trans sprockets as "sidecar use" for sportsters then.....

but that was just a little while ago.
