Sputnik Sidecar wheel
I have to fix a flat on my sidecar. Anyone know of a socket wrench or spanner that fits the hub nut?
This nut is round with four cutouts on it. Wondering about torque for this nut.
Thanks,

Not familiar with the rig, but the tool trucks (SnapOn, MAc, Matco, etc) have a large variety of those type sockets for various applications. Also an open face pin adjustable pin spanner might work OK. OTC tools makes those. Measure the distance across the 2 opposing notches and go shopping. Another options is to find a socket the correct diameter and have a machinist cut away the part not needed, or with patience a hacksaw or dremel, file and careful measuring you could make one. Try a pawn shop for a socket your are going to redo. Max
Hello,
I've only had the rig a while.....
I decided to block the wheel up. Got adventurous.
When I removed the round threaded cap I found out it was just holding the hub cap (dish shape sheet metal).
Found the castle nut and pin under that and removed the wheel.
The local bike shop has to order a tube and I'll take it in Tuesday.
This bike may not have had maintenance done as I found some loose spokes; probably the cause of the flat.
Thanks for the replies.

They came new with loose spokes! Check carefully where the spokes cross. Run loose they can saw through each other. If you find damage you need to relace with new spokes or find another wheel.
I believe the axle nut is set up to load the bearing. Prop the wheel off the ground and spin it. Tighten the axle nut until it begins to drag, then back it off just a smidge. be sure to use a cotter key or pin in the axle!
Got the flat fixed, ground the spoke nuts smooth inside the rim, taped then installed a rim band.
The spokes are all tight, wheel as true as it will be with 2 oz weight for balance. runs smooth up to 60 mph.
I'd like to find another wheel to fit when it's time for a new tire.

Hi,
I use a brass bolt in one of 4 notches and tap lightly with a small hammer to tighten. I had the loose spoke problem, stamped Russian threads was the problem. Fix was buying another hub/wheel from Dauntless. Sputnik hub, stainless spokes, aluminum wheel, love it...

Hey,
Did you get that flat fixed and grind the spokes?
Just wondering!!!!

May have to replace it later, but have it working now.
We ground the spokes, taped them then put a new rubber band on top of that. Also static balanced the wheel using stick on weights from t a tire shop.
Spins like a top. I've had it up to 55 mph and it works well, but may eventually replace it.
This wheel now has 4000 more miles on it. Has a little vibration at lower speeds. I will have the rim repaired or replaced this winter.
I love the sidecar combo.
