Sidecar to Motorcycle Front Upper Mount?
I have a 1981 Goldwing 1100 I with a Honda full fairing and motor guards.
The motor guard on the sidecar side appears to be in the way. Is it necessary to remove the motorguard so that the upper mount can be attached? Is their some way I am not seeing in order to attach the upper mount bracket?
I guess since I won't be have to worry about damage to the motor on that side, removing the guard is probably the answer I am looking for, but isn't the motor guard necessary to keep from burning ones leg against the motor head? I also have pegs on the motor guards so I can stretch my legs out when cruising down the highway I'd like to somehow keep. without the motor guard, I won't have a peg on that side to stretch my leg out to.
any suggestion or remidies?
Remove the gard and use the mount to put your lage on that's what i did
Usually the right side engine guard is removed since it's function is it save the cases from damage if the bike is dropped. This shouldn't be a problem with a hack mounted. Some have attached a footrest to the upper strut. Some use the strut itself. Some mounts go around the guard.

I was afraid you were going to conferm what I had to do. Now I got to dig into my fairing to get at the mounting nuts and bolts for the fairing lowers, it will have to be removed before I can get my stuby hands and wrenches into the area where the motor guard is mounted so I can remove it and replace it with the sidecar upper mount. Are we having fun yet? LoL LoL LoL
Next, I'll have to tackle setting up my carb synching guages, I hope I can find some rubber tubing the right size, the tubing that came with the kit isn't long enough.
Do the rubber tubing comimg from the carbs have to be the same length for all four guages? seems like it should to me, but I don't read anything that says whether or not this is so. Besides tuning the carbs, the only thing left to do is modifying the front mount on the sidecar and attaching all the mounting hardware onto the motorcycle frame. I should then be ready for my first test ride.
Now I guess I bette get my butt in gear and fire up the mig welder and see if I can still lay down a decent bead or not, It's been a few years, but I hope it is kind of like riding a bike, you never really forget how to do it.
Thanks all for your input.

whetever you dont DONT weld anything onto the bike frame!
If you have ANY doubt about your welding skills have it done by a pro welder...better to be safe then in a ditch later, somewhere with a broken mount weld, and possibly injuries.
Bob in Wis: I hope I didn't imply I was going to weld the mounting hardware Kit to the motorcycle frame, I only ment the one forward mount on the CJ sidecar frame, that has to be done to allow for the adjustment neccessary to hook the sidecar to the motorcycle.
I trust my welding ability, that is after I have done practicing, bringing my skills back up to par. If I am not happy with my porformance during this time, I will certainly take it to a professional to do it, that is if I can find one who will do it at a reasonable price.
I think the pro welders around here think their work is art, they sure charge as if I was trying to buy some classic painting or something. I've been quoted $200 to $300 dollars for the job and that is even after I have done the prep work, by cutting and placing the modified mount piece. Any members in the Reno, Sparks area, that is willing to give a handicapped rider some help in this department?
We have beutiful weather predicted thru the week-end, so I guess I better get off my duff and get busy with the prep work and all. Thank again for the replies and the friendly worning, it's always appreciated when one points out things for safety's sake, if others would listen then, like I have certainly done, their would be less mistakes and possible injuries and/or worse. sorry for the bad spelling, tried to correct some of it. LoL
Thank you,
