Sidecar body width question

Hi y'all!

Got another question here about a hack build. I know what's wanted in general for this outfit. Thing is the drawings look good but wondering how wide for the body? I'd appreciate any info on body dimensions of sidecars, something rarely mentioned.

This will be on a KZ1000P-15 Police bike with the original saddlebags mounted in crashbars, plus front crashbars and running boards. I'm figuring the crashbar/saddlebag clearance will be enough as the minimum leg clearance on car side. As a cargo rig the larger the better for the body simply for sake of fitting 'whatever' in the available space.

Don't know if a 24"/60cm body width is enough. Originally thought to go 36"/90cm width but now thinking that's maybe too wide. Of course the question somewhat boils down to maximum track width, but how the wheel and body is configured speaks to that too. Currrent preferred design has the wheel external of sidecar body, the 2nd choice has it tucked inside to maximize body width while maintaing track width. Swingarm is off a GS550 and about 12 - 14" clearance needed for that.

So, I'm wondering how wide are these double rigs I've seen and for those with larger chairs, how wide are they? Also good to know the 'normal' sizes of smaller chairs to get a better idea of what I'm seeing in pictures.

Thanks for any info!

.

My Gemini double has a 30-inch bench seat it it. Add 2 more inches for the body contours. My hack wheel is external. All totaled, the width of my rig is slightly over 7 feet. I'm not sure what my tracking distance is.

Thanks!

Pretty close to my first design width for car but my track would have been about 60".

SUPER! THANKS, Lonnie, huge help!!!

I can use my original design if I want to by those numbers. Only problem is cost. At a 24" width and sidewall height I can build out of 2 sheets of 4' x 8' aluminum, but increasing width calls for another sheet at $150-$175. Not all that much extra $$$ though, considering, and probably worth it in the long run. Hoping to do lots and lots of 'Long Runs' 🙂

Thanks!

Remember too that the wider you are the more stable, i.e. not having to worry about the sidecar coming up unexpected. My Goldwing/Friendship 3 won't fit between the fenders on my 80 inch wide trailer.

Thanks for the tips & pics! I'm disabled so extreme offroad isn't an option. From that, I can't go anywhere that I couldn't go in my full sized truck. As long as I stay within its dimensions the outfit should be good to go wherever I'd want to go.

Stability is a major issue because the roads I travel most often here are wild twisty mountain roads, very challenging and demanding. The rig can use all the track width possible, just so it fits on the roads!

Edit to add: Very nice outfit, very nice trailer!!

Yeah, the trailer is kind of like my sidecar rig. I owned about 6 different ones before I found one that works just right for me.

Looks like a good choice. That's why I'm asking so many questions here. I'd like to get things as close to right the first time, without major revisions or unexpected surprises. This may well be my only shot at a sidecar so I need to make every shot count, especially the first one.
