Rake and Trail

Hello,
i just finished the setup of my sportster with a transmoto sidecar. needs to be finetuned now. i also want to improve steering and have two options:
get my trees modfied by E-Z or get complete new ones from a guy who is mostly in trike business, so i have to come up with some numbers.
can someone help me out here?

Got mine done there and the quality of work was Great and the turn oround time was shorter than I ever thought it would be, they keep you informed as to what is going on,

Hi Jorg: Welcome from Louisiana. I haven't yet seen a transmoto rig in person. Please post a photo(s)your transmoto rig when you can.

FYI, Side Effects had a Steerite conversion for a Sportster ready to ship about 2 months ago, but I didn't buy it as our budget has been spent working up a rig for my wife. As I understand, the Steerite trees are especially for sidecar rigs with an added 1/4 degree of positive camber to help the bike stop pulling to the right. It's on my want list.

What year Sporty?
If it uses 39mm tubes Peter usually has a set in stock in exchange for yours.
If you wish to keep your stock trees for later resale check out my ad in Misc. Sidecar related (stock FXLR trees.

Thanks for all the advice. I contacted Side Effects, seems the way to go.
Here are some pics: 07 Sportster 1200 with TM 601.
The avatar pic is my old rig in germany back in the 80,BMW R51/3 with
Steib LS350.

Something to be aware of and plan for is that if your sidecar is leavel it won't be when you get the rake changed, the car will be down in the nose because when the fork goes out the front of the bike will drop, not by a lot but it will drop so it will be necessary to change the car frame settings, hopefully you can just rotate the front mount.

A 1" pvc fork spring spacer will bring it back up.

That's a Great rig. I really like the style.

Lonnie and everyone else,

Since your on the subject, does the front to back level affect anything or is it jut cosmetic and possible a clearance issue? Everything I've read says it's mostly cosmetic but I'm very interested in your opinion.

Usually the rake or lack of it is inconsequental. Aesthic choices usually have the sidecar somewhat level. The only time a rake might be needed is if the flat bottom of a car creates high speed lift. In that case a rake would be prudent to counteract the tendency to lift.

The biggest issue related to front to rear 'levelness' of a sidecar is how it may affect the passenger. Too much down in front and the passenger can feel like they are sliding forward off the seat under braking. Of course this is not true in all cases as sidecars vary.
The balance between lift,as Lonnie mentioned, and increased drag can be a real thing dependant upon the sidecar. We really do not need more 'drag' as speed increases as we will get plenty already just from the nature of the beasts. But, aerodynamics probably should be another thread.
