Putting the exhaust on the left side....

I'm working on mounting a Ural sidecar on my CB750A with Dauntless mounts. None of the four exhausts I have will fit with the mounts, which is not at all their fault, I might add. I have been wanting to get a quieter exhaust anyway and get the noise away from whomever will be riding in the car so I am making my own that will put the muffler on the left hand side, away from the passenger. Has anyone else done anything like this or had issues with exhaust noise bothering the passengers?

I put some pictures in the album of what I'm doing. The header pipes are from a four into two system and the muffler I'll use is off of a four into one, I had Butler's Muffler here in town bend me up the crossover pipe, they did an excellent job, it fits under the bike really snug and was just what I wanted.

That's going to be nice, they did a real nice job on the pipe and I'll bet whoever get to ride in the car is going to appreciate it, probely make conversation easier also, going to be interesting to see what it looks like when your done.

I'm in the other Leavenworth 🙂

Good job. We have done a few conversions from right to left side an dall of them were their own challenge. Sometimes on inline fours and vertical twins you can cut off the header pipes on the vertical part and rotate them in the head towards the left side. Then add to them and end up with a four into one or two into one collector with one muffler.
The v twins are the ones that are a pain. Someone said that v twins have their exhausts off the right due to the flat trackers early on wanting to save their exhaust when they went down on the left turn only dirt ovals. Dunno if that is true or not but sure wish they went off the left side. Of course our british and down under friends probably like it how it is 🙂

The spoked Honda sidecar wheel may match the bike better but there is a possibility that it may not handle side stresses incurred with a sidehack rig as well as the Russian wheel it replaces. It was designed with side stress in mind, for rigid mounted sidecar usage.
Solo bike wheels are not designed for vehicles that do not bank in the turns; there stresses are almost vertical from axle to pavement.

Check those spokes, nipples and wheel bearings often.

Thanks, Lonnie. I didn't get a wheel with the chair, so I just went with what I had. I think I need to have the spacer milled down some to get the wheel in a littler further. I have relaced some dirtbike wheels with stuff from Buchanan's out in California, would that be a good idea for this application?
There's some more pictures of the exhaust work in the album now. My welding is pretty bad, I'm pretty out of practice and the stick welder is pretty heavy duty for exhaust, but it works. The muffler is really quiet, I'm pretty happy with it. It's not beautiful, but it works pretty good for now.

The longevity of the Honda wheel will vary in proportion of how hard the rig is used.
Best to check the tightness of the spokes once in a while and go from there.

Your pipe looks like "free view up to the valves". A little more volume and absorbing chambers possibly would do good. Or did you like my former boss a "sound tuneing".
I just remember a drive from Kopenhagen to the Russian border in Finnland allways behind a 4 in 1 (CB750 too?) and do remember vividly the hour long ringing in my ears each night at rest.
Out of that I would recomend to use the pipe with the lowest noise emmision possible to get.

Have fun
Sven

Maybe If you speak to Buchannon's ask if larger spokes are available.

Good idea, Claude, that's something I can do down the road. Right now I'm just trying to get it together. 🙂 I did a KX80 with stuff from Buchanan's it was really beefy.
As far as noise, that's a stock CB750 4 into 1 muffler and it is super quiet, I am really surprised, I think it's going to work pretty good, at least for now.
I got my mount back from Dauntless today and it still didn't fit even after he remade it so we cut it up and had the local shop here weld it up for me and now all the mounts are pretty much ready to put the car on. We still have to cut one tube that came from them, it's too long, and drill out some other holes that are to small for the bolts supplied.
Getting there.....

with patience you'll get it! (As we say with patience and a stick you get even the green (apples) down. Don't hurry too much for not to wreck anything.
Best Luck
