old car new life
This is a "sweet" side car. It was built buy a man named Mr. Sweet of Salem NH. He built a bunch of them he also built racing boats.
In the early 80s my father had this put on his 78 wing. He rode his second wife’s kids around in it for a few years.
After that it sat years in the back of his garage. Finally he gave me the whole set up I had to over haul the bike.
I road my 3 kids around in it for years. Many Kodak moments.
After that I gave it to a friend we put it on a Honda 1100 shadow for his two kids.
He gave it back to me when he was done.
Next I put it on a frame with two wheels, long travel suspension and a draw bar it became a four wheeler trailer. my neighbor rode his kids around in it for a few years. When he was done he gave it back.
Now I have adopted two small dogs and it has really cut into our riding time.
We hate leaving the dogs home.
So here we go I have a nomad and a sweet body.
I’ve been taking some pics and thought I would share them with you all.
i hope this works.
this is what cameback this time
had to make a frame and mounts.
i dont have the fender anymore it went out with the trash.
im molding the body to fit this fender. its my first time working with this much fiber glass
these are my main passengers
i worked on the body over the week
turns out the air ride has to much travel. i made a link that limits the travel to 3.5 inches.
the link stops the wheel from dropping to far when the bag is pressured up . it also works as a bottoming stop.
i also mounted the pinto shock i had hanging around for years.
Dave,
It looks like you are going to have a lot of stress just outboard of where the two front struts meet. There is no gusset or bracing to support the tube.
With the heavy Nomad and sidecar I can see a potential bending problem at this point.

I’ve been looking at that for a while now. I’m still pondering it.
I mounted it that way so I had room for the highway peg.
The only other chose was to bend the adjuster tube.
It’s pretty strong tubing. But I am on the bend.
I may gusset the bend to make it a little stronger. I hate too
I’m going to make a bolt on dolly to move the car when it’s off.
Maybe I can incorporate that into a gusset
If I'm looking at the area your looking at why not just use a flat bar and bend it to fit the radius and weld it to the bottom of the tube like a 2x3/8 with tapered ends for looks, the strength of the tube would be at least tripled and that way the Hi Way peg could still be used,,just a thought.
Interesting story about the sidecar. It went through nomadic life and now ended up with Nomad.
Reworked body looks very nice!
Just some thoughts in picture attached. Also be very careful if you are using heim ends as they will allow movement if not placed correctly at best.

How can they with such tight tolerances, I'm curious.
I think the heim joints are going to rattle after awhile. I may have to replace them in the future. If properly triangulated there shouldn’t be any movement. This mounting is 100 times stronger than the mounts that came with it on the gold wing. That had mounts on the crash bars. I’m trying to get my dad to send me some pictures of it when it was new.

If properly set up it can't move unless you count the 1 1/2 tho clearance given so the bolt will go through the joint.
I made a tank today for the air ride. The tank is permanently mounted under the frame. The tank will be pumped up to 150 psi. The regulator will keep the air bag at 8 to 15 psi and can be adjusted for the load in the car. I still need to add a release so I can let air out of the bag when needed.
I also cleaned up the bike mounts and painted them. I will be putting them on the bike permanently tomorrow
this is the front lower and upper
this is the rear lower

I was doing some research on paint. I want to paint the car to match the bike. What I have found so far. The paint is made by color rite Paint Company. They sell to the public. The red is a base, coat top and the beige one layer. That’s all fine but they want about 4 times the normal price for paint. The paint supplies will be about $600.00. That’s ridiculous. Does anyone know a better supplier that will match? I have never had any luck with the paint suppliers using a color match machine.
Color rite is one of the best suppliers of urethane based paint systems for automobile and motorcycles.
Present paint systems aren't anything like in 1965 when one could buy a quart of gloss black nitrocellulose lacquer for $2.95 and a gallon of lacquer thinner for $1.25.

I would like to suggest that when checking the tank that you start at a much lower pressure and check all the weld start, stop and corner areas for leaks with bubble water and then take it up in increments of 10#, in reality that's a bomb that if a weld fails and it ruptures it could do some very serious damage, you can only see the outside of the weld, I've done this type of testing and some of the results were very surprising to say the least, when they pop there's NO warning. When at full pressure leave it overnight pressurized and check for leaks again. Please give it some serous thought and be carefull, there's 72,000 enegery pounds of pressure wanting to get out.
thanks
i did bring it up slowly and did have to fix a few pin holes. the tank is made out of 1/8 steel.
Today’s progress
I was shamed into redoing the front mount. I cut off the old one and made a new one out of some 3x6x1/8 plate. I put it in the brake and bent both ends to make the bracket follow the bend.
This is a picture of the front sub frame bolted to it.
After that I installed a couple of gussets on the bottoming shop and finished up the welding.
You would think after over 35 years of welding and having a trig I would not have to fill my welds for painting but no still bondoing.
After much sanding I decided to prime the frame to see how it would look with paint. When I had the whole frame done I looked over on the lift and saw the swing arm so I mixed up the last of the lacquer primer I had. I was 1 table spoon short with the acetone thinner so I added some mineral spirits.(i know some of you are laughing now.) well for the ones that aren’t it seemed to mix so I shot it on the swing arm and one more coat on everything else. 5 minutes later the primer lifted off everything. The only good thing was 95% of the primer could be blown off with an air gun. So I blew it off and reprimed everything with enamel primer. I don’t know why I can’t take my time when I paint I had the right thinner in the back of the paint cabinet. Its drying now if it looks ok tomorrow I will paint it if not off to the sand blaster.

i understand. but $185 a quart is highway robbery i can buy the same urithan paint for $50 to $85 a quart at the local parts store. i cant even amagine what shipping will cost.
