I just purchased this rig and.........it's a lot different from my 99 Yamaha with California sidecar.

Haven't taken it out yet, still finding my way around the dash and shifter.

I ran about 75 pounds of ballast in the other rig, and thinking this may need more.
Also, anyone know if it's possible to take out the "dashboard" in the sidecar? It really limits the space.

Any and all tips would be greatly appreciated.

It should just unscrew from the body, up behind the speakers, you'll have to unhook the speaker wires and any switches. Your better off to hide the wire harness, you won't want to take the radio harness completely out, although it does come out.

Hi

Nice rig.

I run about 100lbs of water in collapsible jugs in my Road King rig, and it seems fine.

A little less in the other 2 rigs.

(flying the chair) scares the you know what out of me.

Have fun with that great looking rig.

Jay,
Three bags of lead shot under the seat works well with the Liberty and doesn't use up trunk space.

Thanks to everyone for all the information! Weather is finally cooperating, so I'll be taking the Broom out on it's maiden voyage. Lead shot in place, all systems go......

Maiden voyage yesterday. Don't know why, but it feels much smaller compared the 99 RSV I was driving.
Steers great, 75# of shot in the sidecar, stops quicker than the old hack (but the brake is screeching.....off to the mechanic)
Not a fan of the bouncy sidecar, but I haven't had a passenger yet, that should prove interesting.

Definitely heading to Virginia in the summer to take a class. It's the closest I could find 🙁

Thanks for all the responses and assistance! Keep those tips coming 🙂

the ultra wiring in the sidecar is VERY VERY expensive - the dash will come out but dont lose any of the parts or cut anything - i converted a 04 to 06 wiring - pile of cash.

if its a 06 or newer the sidecar sound wiring is CAN-BUS just like the new softails - dont screw that up, it will suck [it appears that the sidecar can-bus was the guinea pig to see if it would work - and it does.]

those paint matched sidecar paint kits that is on that bike cost a LOT of money. basically you purchased a sidecar that came with all the paint parts for the bike as well - very cool setup - fairly rare [15 sets per color i think - those sets are numbered]. i think the kit was about 13 large. came with the entire ultra sidecar, bike fairing - bags - sidecovers - tourpak - tank - fenders, then you could ebay off all the stock parts.

if you find the steering difficult, first get the alignment spot on and then install a raked tree

whatever you do - those numbered sidecar sets are very rare - they advertised how many they "would" make but it appears that they did not actually make that many. i have seen one that changed hands recently that is orange #11.

they are perfectly happy loaded at 80 on the freeway - but my wrists get so sore that i put on a raked tree. rode 10k this summer the most in the last few years.

Thanks for the wiring warning Timo. I'll leave things alone for now. The steering is just fine, as the previous owner had the raked trees done. I was already used to that from my other rig.

Mine is numbered 5 of 15 ~ I'm not having much luck finding out about them on the internet, thanks for the information. Funny thing, after I bought this on ebay, one showed up on craigslist about 35 miles from my home. It's the same color scheme, 2007 and 15 of 15. Doesn't have the raked trees and extra chrome.

I have a 07 ultra with a california sidecar When I have a 100 lbs in the sidecar I run the shocks on the bike at 32 lbs pressure and when I have 200 lbs in the sidecar I run the shocks at 20 lbs pressure Just finished 7000 mile trip and had no problem with the car coming up check you manual on how much air your shocks will hold and try different pressures

Nice ride there Mary Jo ....keep me informed for the STEP class I need to take mine and VA is the closest to me . I am in Inwood WV and have been thinking about doing the class.

The one thing I don't like(i have never ridin one) is the unsprung frame and the springs under the body on the Harley units. Seems to me the bumps would bother you one the body bounce and two the sidecar wheel is rigid , but I guess it's something to get used to just like going from 2 to 3 wheels.
