Been reading the threads about car tires for GL 1500s. Mine is a 1200. Havent looked at all the threads, but has anyone put car tires on a 1200?

The GL1200 on the rear has a 15 inch wheel. The issue is that in the 15 inch size, automotive wheels are about 1/3 of an inch larger in diameter making it hard at best, and it can be not safe to mount an automotive tire on your stock rear wheel. People have done it however the best way to do it is to machine down your rear wheel to automotive diameters. You can run most 145 15 tires which can be purchased at cokker tire. There are no automotive tires that will fit the stock 16 inch front wheel any longer. The old twin tires worked well when you could get them but even if you did find one now, it would be quite old and not wise to run.

That looks great! A little more enhanced than welding a inventory hub into a move rim...

OUCH!!!  Pago, I hope you don't mind if I cut and paste a portion of the story and the pic over for quick reference.

... So I bought the [155R15] tire and took it to a local shop. I warned him that this may/should work, but we needed to be real careful, as some had to use extreme pressure in order to seat the bead. He said "no problem" and said he would be real careful. I was watching/helping him mount it, and he got interrupted several times. So when he went off talking on the phone I went next door to a machinist shop as I had business there. Shortly thereafter, we heard a POP/BLAM, and the building slightly shook. Then a whole bunch of cursing.

Went next door, and the tire guy was holding his very red/swollen hand up in agony, bouncing around and cursing up a storm. The tire looked like this:

We got him loaded up on advil to combat the swelling, and cleaned the cut. He was a big muscular guy, and was very very lucky. Nothing broken, but badly bruised and swollen.

So. Yes, it can and has been done; BUT..... (emphasis added)

NOW,
Who knows the rim size difference of the 17" auto and cycle rims? I know the 16 auto tire is a safe option and the 15" isn't. Antone tried the 17"s ?

17 inch is almost spot on between bikes and cars.

Thanks Jay,
Have you found any small sizes for bikes or sidecars?
