Brake line connection
I read Lonnie's reply to Paul in Arizona regarding the brake connection for his newly acquired Harley/LE/LW rig.
(Congrats to PaulAZ for his very nice rig)
It leads me to wonder about the ramifications in connecting the sidecar brake from the motorcycle rear caliper (as Lonnie suggested) as opposed to connecting from the motorcycle rear brake master.
Is there a functional advantage in connecting to either one of the two locations?
I am currently working on my winter project and am planning on using a double banjo bolt and also installing a double shut off quick disconnect.
I am soliciting suggestions and comments as to which might be the better location for the sidecar brake connection-----motorcycle rear caliper or motorcycle rear brake master.
Many thanks.
Jay.
i put a "t" at the fitting for the brake switch makes a short connection. I don't like quick disconnect . shutoff on both sides is good
Later (after 2005?) Harley rigs use the double banjo bolt on the rear caliper. Mine is a 93 which had the rear brake line changed to a single line without the tee by a previous owner. Putting in a double banjo bolt was easier for me than putting the rear brake line back to stock. The attached file shows the double banjo bolt on a Harley rear caliper. There should not be any functional difference as long as you have a big enough master cylinder to deal with two brakes.
I've had brakes connected both ways on different rigs. Caliper to sidecar and master cylinder to sidecar.
I prefer not using the sidecar brake.
Lonnie
We hook it up either way, both work well. We always recommend hooking up the brake and can see no good reason not to.
