Another compatability Question Harley&California
1985 model
Will this car easily and economically be fitted to a 1999 FLHTC ? What we see is what there is, mounts will need to be purchased, are they easily available ? my searches here lead me to believe that DMC will have them.
Calif's web site (PDF) lists pn #'s for every part:
http://www.californiasidecar.com/downloads/Sidecar_Parts_List.pdf
I will go look at this car tommorrow at 4-5pm EST. Apparently it has no brake system, can it be retro-fitted with OEM parts ? aftermarket parts ?
Does it need brakes....? tilt....? stabilizer....? raked trees....?.....Keep SHOPPING/SEARCHING ?< should I ?
Money is tite......would you buy it, are they serviceable into the future or are parts made of unobtanium.....
i realize mounts and brakes may cost 800-1000$ (IF I can get them)....
Thanks, DPH
We make bike specific bolt on mounts for your bike that will work with this sidecar, You will also need two eye bolts to adapt to our eye bolts and a curved strut to allow for clearence for your foot to use the brake pedal. Brakes are a problem to fit onto this sidecar as there is not extra room in the wheel well for the calipar not to hit the body. I can not tell in the photo if this sidecar has a shock or is the torrsion bar suspention. Torrsion bars can be an issue as you can not get them however you can modifiy VW bars to work. The lens for the tail lights are no longer made. You can buy windshields from www.bikescrean.com only other parts that might be an issue would be upolstery which can be made localy.
Any time you add a sidecar to a motorcycle you will have heavy steering. It does not matter the brand of sidecar, if you want light steering then you will want different triple tree's that change the angle of the forks making for lighter steering by reducing trail.

Jay,
Thanks for sharing your smarts !! appreciated.

Your Cal side car looks like the same model I have. What Jay says is right on. I do not think there is any way to fit a brake. As for the shock/torsion bar, mine has an arm and what looks like a steel spring around the axle. Not a torsion bar. As for California Side Car, I have spoken with them on the phone and due to a fire some time back, they have absolutely no parts for their side cars. They recommended DMC and Jay has been very helpful. Good luck with your hook up.

A problem with this list is that it is old. When I called them, they said the only parts I could still get for my 1996 Friendship 3 were brake pads and the stainless brake line that runs from the caliper over to the bike.
They only have those two because they are also used on a trike. For all other parts, I was told to "Go Aftermarket". That's why we started the interchange list at http://www.sidecar.com/mbbs22/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=8938&start=1
