Kenda K270, dualsport knob tread been on there since the BlackDog in July. Would have gotten farther had I chained up or studded the tire, but that snow was like wet cement- we would have gotten stuck a little further up the road is all 🙂

We went over to Fir Mt Road next. It was packed snow; a steep ascent but we made it to the top of the ridge (a climb from 800' to about 2000' in about a mile) and then dropped back down through the woods on Swyers Drive. I will edit and post that video a little later. Right now I gotta go to work 🙁

After we gave up on Neal Creek Canyon, we looped over to Fir Mountain Road with much better luck. We made it to the top of the ridge, a climb from about 800' to around 2000'. Not bad on worn Kenda K270's

you make it look soooo easy! I'm sure of the fun factor..too bad you are so far away...here in CT a drop of any parcipation could halt the works for weeks..you are a true inspiration...thank you for sharing, L

No, really - looks good. I hope to get some pictures during SNOWCAMP in a couple weeks; will post them to SCT before February with any luck.

You really don't NEED TWD to commute in the winter. What you do need is good tires with a block tread. Dirt oriented dualsport treads, trials tires or knobbies work best. This KLR has Kenda K270s on it, somewhat worn, no chains or studs. You can see I am using my weight to control the rig on the snow: I put thepassenger pegs down before I started. To climb hills I stand on the rear pegs and shift my weight aft to give the rear wheel traction. I move forward over the front wheel to get bite for turning. I stay off the brakes when turning, getting my speed down before I am in the corner and carrying that speed through the turn. Smooth input at the controls is the key to riding on slick surfaces!

Nice reality check. Given your penchant for winter back country route finding, why not carry a real shovel. I especially liked the boot packing of the road ahead. Perhaps some snow shoes would make that task easier and provide a back up option if you can't get unstuck.
