Shipping a sidecar from PA to ME
Anyone have any carrier recommendations or experience to share. This would normally be a no brainer fly and ride but given the time of year the weather could make it risky!!
I live in Portland, I’m from Pennsylvania, I’ve ridden a sidecar to and from, and I have some PTO to spare…
Posted by: @tomjgerken@dirk-shearer have we met by chance? Blood Sweat and Gears or sidecar social?
Yup—Both! Bald guy with a couple small block Guzzis and a ‘78 R80/7 rat mated to a Sputnik
I recently used Motoshippers.com to send sidecar only from Denver to Indianapolis. Enclosed trailer, took a week or two. Guy owns his own business, does not sub it out. I think he said 10 years so far. $800. I was pleased with his residential delivery. I recommend.
Thanks, great information and sounds like a good option. As it turns out we have an adequate window of opportunity this weekend and though it may be a bit chilly decided to fly n' ride.

That's the tough olde Tom Gerken we all know and love....get out there and drive that rig home to Maine (as I sit comfortably in an 1858 Chateau in LA Rochelle, France)
Go, Tom....Go.

@miles-ladue The wheels are in motion. The 1150 GS I bought in Colorado last year was a great rig but continues to be plagued with engine troubles, not to mention Jill and I are both of an age we could use a bit more comfort. Looking for a replacement bike for the other outfit I found this and it seems like the right deciision. Just need to sell the other as a project or sell the tub to someone whose interested. Enjoy France!
@tomjgerken I looked at it last week. They said a guy from Maine was interested 🙂 Nice rig!! The goodies in their garage are awesome!!!!! They are super nice folks. Good for you!
I used MotoShippers a couple of time: first to move most of my bikes/sidecars from SFO to CA: I was promised a full empty enclosed trailer, of course when it arrived at home (incline street in SFO) there were already 2 bikes in the trailer: we had to get help in the street to load (no ramp)my old GS in the front of the PU truck, right by the fifth wheel hookup... The second time was from AZ to the old DMC, WA: a rig + a vintage bike I just sold to be delivered somewhere on the way: as usual everything is OK till you pay! Only to discover, later, that MotoShippers does not do all of the transportation himself: he hires local transporters on the way and is not able to guarantee exact time for pickup or deliveries. It took more than 3 weeks to get both units delivered (after a pickup delay of 1 week) in the end he was even refusing my calls! Maybe this is one of the reasons he had to file bankruptcy while based in CA? Haulbikes is definitely my choice now: on time, hyper professional and you always know where your bike is!
@mj Having made the move sight unseen it's nice to have commentary from someone who's actually laid eyes on it. Yes, he has been awesome to deal with and I have total confidence that everything will be in order as he says it is. Always iffy making a move site unseen, but I feel very good about this. Flying in tomorrow afternoon, do the deal and begin the trek back Friday morn. Praying for fair weather and following winds!!
Tom, that is a beautiful looking rig. Nice that MJ can vouch for it, as she has a lot of experience with Sidecar rigs.
May your trip home be filled with Green Lights and Blue Skies.

Tom, that sure is a nice-looking rig, have a save trip back. I was wounding if MJ was checking it out as it was around her area, good job MJ. I had a bike like that 12 R1200RT giving to me last spring. My biggest complaint was the stock windshield, had one made up was a big improvement. I don't know what route your taking but if you end up close by you more than welcome to stop by and get warm up, Last month I just had an R1150R basically donate to my collection. The sad part the BMWs starting to take over my Harleys. I keep telling myself it has to stop, room getting tight and taking too much of my time to take care of them. As far as Haul bikes go had enough bikes pick up and drop off with no problems except the last one as it came damage and the driver would not show the pictures when they pick it up. Took a good three month of run around for them to take care of it.
@2FLTC I'm to new to know the names that go with the handles on the forums. I recognize the handles but drawing a blank on names. Not sure the route yet, but looking at the weather systems coming through it looks like getting north of I-80 gives the best opportunity to minimize the chance of precipation. tomgerken53@gmail.com if you want to email
