Hey folks, so I was wondering has anyone gone on one of the many beaches in Washington or Oregon, successfully on their one wheel drive rig with car tires? Inquiring doggy wants to know. The reason I ask is my big Class C motor home is on an E-450 chassis and even though I have big duallys on the back I really don't want to find out what it costs to get a silly motorhome driver unstuck! We want to be able to get to the areas we can go landsailing on that aren't next to the camp ground. In the past I just threw my gear in the truck and went. The Bimmer could pull the Blokart or a small bike trailer with the kart in it but it's not a Ural with 2WD, so wondered if I keep on the packed sand would it be crazy to take it on the beach hiway?

Reminded me of a job I was on at Port Hedland.

Was near the beach and and someย  mangroves.ย

Old mate came wandering past and showed us a crab he'd caught that filled his backpack.ย

At lunchtime Aaron jumped into our hired Landcruiser ute and ripped down to the beach.

There were previous wheel marks but the cruiser dropped into the mud to its belly.

Tidal so he needed a tow pronto or $70,000 to pay for a new ute.

Rang the local towing company and had to wait 5 minutes for for the guy to stop laughing.ย

He then said $500.

An expensive excursion.ย

One wheel drive?

Suggest a KLR 650 with knobbies.

2wd? Only know of one easy to get option.

You can always entertain us with yarns about knobbies on your current rig.

Oh and winches, wenches and sand anchors.ย

The last three sound like trouble.

Neil, Iย  suggest that you do not try thisย  !

Yes, out at Longbeach, the 27 miles long sand highway,ย  cars, trucks, motor homes, and motorcycles drive on the hard sand all the time.ย

But get off theย  hard sand,ย  and it gets embarrassing,ย  and potentially a tow bill.

I have driven theย  Longbeach sand highway,ย  on a 2 wheel motorcycle,ย  and in my Subaruย  all wheel drive cars, but.....a single wheel drive BMW K-100 or K-11, with a sidecar being dragged through the sand.....NO !

OK well thanks folks. Pretty much what I expected. As we sort out our retirement plans this is one of the challenges. Not too keen on taking our plug in hybrid Fusion out there, either. Considering a little RHD Kei van or Jimmy but need the hybrid until the missus is done consulting in Issaquah. Had a 88 Surf diesel (4runner) years ago was a decent rig til the head dropped a valve seat. Expensive noises followed! could consider switching to a Ural but really haven't had much time to enjoy the K1100LT yet. Not wanting to tell the wench to ready the winch. Bad idea! 🤣ย

Iยดd say as answer to

"Suggest a KLR 650 with knobbies."

ย

KLR650 is very front heavy and I have never kissed the mud as often as with my KLR. even my W800 with knobbies behaves much better then the KLR on tricky ground.ย

Take a light bike that loves mud.ย

ย

"2wd?ย

Only know of one easy to get option."ย

Ural 2wd only knows one direction DOWN!

I took a Ural Gear up on the beach from Seaside Oregon, up to Astoria Oregon. It's about 12 miles of running in the sand. It was an excellent ride. I effectively used the 2WD to run through the sand. Didn't get stuck at all, but had some difficulty steering at times. There were a lot a cars getting stuck on the beach that day. I probably spent 1.5 hours running on the beach, and then about 3 hours cleaning all the salty sand off the bike. The fun-to-work ratio was a bit off, but I would do it again.ย
