Hi all, I am in the process of fabricating a friction type steering damper for my springer forks, it has 3 steel parts and 2 fiber ones that are sandwiched together like the early Harley ones, this is all homemade so the Harley parts won't fit, what I need is the fiber washers or an idea of what I can make my own out of, fiberglass? plastic? I even thought of leather? appreciate any ideas or input, thanks, Doc.

Maybe a clutch plate off of something small...cut down?

You want something like clutch material for sure - got to be softer than the steel plates but wear well and have good friction qualities. You could do worse than using leather, at least to start. It wears well, is widely available, cheap, easy to work, was used as a clutch material (way back in the day) and doesn't cause asbestosis 😉

Probly have to change it regularly, though.

Try brake lining.

Try a truck parts house. Some of the 18 wheelers that run a Lippe clutch have clutch brakes that have fiber discs about 4 inches in diameter.

I like loo4two's idea best.
Possibly some disc brake pads would work also. Could be cut down as required. Or you could cut pieces out of a clutch disc? You really don't need a full circle although it woudl be nice.
