I just ordered a Hannigan Classic for my BMW R1200CLC. I'll be taking my bike up to them in February and need a trailer that will take the bike up and bring the outfit back.

The Classic is 40" wide by 78" long and 44" high. I'm thinking that the rig will be no more than 88" wide, given no more than a foot between the car and the bike. I don't think there's that much, but surely there's no more than that.(?)

Any advice out there on trailers? I asked U-Haul about 8' trailers and they don't have them. I have a trailer that will haul just my bike, but it's not wide enough for the rig. It's only 5' wide.

I'd rather rent than buy, if that's possible. I don't expect to be trailering my outfit. I only trailered my bike once, after spending a bunch on the trailer. I'd rather ride, except that I know I can't jump on that rig and drive it back to Florida from Kentucky in February with practically no experience.

Ryder did rent car hauler trailers.

What are you pulling with?

U-Hall has some pretty big open trailers around here.

I've (in an emergency) pulled my rig on a trailer that was too narrow. If the side of the trailer is low, you can fashion up an out rigger to sit the sidecar wheel on, and the bike sits at an angle on the trailer. Works well if the trailer has short sides, not so well if they are more then a foot or so high.

I've thought that if needed I could make a raised platform that sat in my 4ft trailer to carry the rig above the sides. also would work better with low sides.

If your using a truck, you could probably pull the heim joints between the rig and put one on the trailer and one in the truck. Most the Hannigans I've seen are rigged to separate without loosing alignment very easy. It seems to be one of their selling points when I've listened to the pitch at shows.

Uhaul rents car trailers if you have a vehicle large enough. I rented one in Norfolk, VA and hauled a car to Wisconsin behind a 1/2 ton Suburban.

I use a landscape trailer. More accurately, I have a landscape trailer and put my rig on it before I bought it. If I remember right, this one is 84 inches between the fenders and 12 feet long. I wouldn't own anything smaller.
My Valkyrie/Ural fits with about 3 or 4 inches to spare on each side.
I pull it with a Chevy Trailblazer, but it has been pulled, full of furniture, with a Ford Taurus without problems. People always say the ramps affect gas mileage and buck wind, but I've pulled with them removed and never noticed it. Up here a lot of the local rental places have these.

I'll be pulling with a Pontiac Vibe. It's a far cry from a Suburban, but it should do the job. I think I'll check with some more rental places around here. It sounds like a 7' trailer should be big enough.

Thanks for the answer.

Thanks, Mike. I think I need to check with some more rental places, now that I know better what to look for. If they have trailers that will haul a car, they would certainly be big enough for my rig.

Maybe contact Hannigan's about rentals in his area.. Rent a small trailer to take the thing to them, then find a place up there that would have a car trailer ready for a one way ride home when it's done. That would save you from dragging an empty trailer around.

I looked all over down in So Cal for a trailer to go pick up my rig, I ended up with a smaller car trailer vs. the ones that just have the two ramps for either tire on a car, big mistake and it was too small, we were lucky to get the bike & sidecar onto it after Jay disassembled it. Make sure you get a good side measurement inside the trailer wheel, a learning curve for this gal...lol Hope you can see this pic's, can't get them in here right... sorry..-------------"http://tinyurl.com/vy4xk" "http://tinyurl.com/vy4xk"

Dragging the empty trailer around isn't a problem, Mike. The Hannigan folks will let me leave the trailer at their place. I think I prefer to have the transport all sorted out before I leave home.
