"So this year has become a kind of family year instead of pushing clients."

"...he can do things he loves to do in a patient way."

"Aint 'that more worth?"

PRICELESS! Seems that many learn far too late, or never learn at all, what are the things of true value in this world and the brief time we have in it. Life is an extravagant and womdrous feast that we have all our years to enjoy. Trying to shove it all down in a great big hurry all the time just gives indigestion.

In deed priceless. Most of my fishing friends were many years older and taught me their lessons. After nearly having handed over my own spoon to Saint Peter in 1999/2000 and accompanied deer collegues, friends and family members on their last journey, I think its time to recapitulate and change priorities.
I often said in a fast manner, that I come back from where others want to get to.
Since my eyes and sences get worse because of a chlorine gas accident late 2008, the same saying gets day by day more sence and weight.

Today I finished with my son to adjust the main ears using prussian blue and spot welded them in place, made up the mounting shaft out of 304 and turned off the teeth of the old incrusted back sprocket. Tomorow I will mill out the seat nests for the new 52 teeth sprocket...
The motor rests now free without interfering anywhere.
Here we go.

Somehow I missed this post until this morning! How very interesting!! I've not shared this before on the net and may edit out some of it later, after a time. Not preaching to anyone, just sharing the truth of the real and actual events of my life, plain and simple but oh, so complicated!

I too have returned from the other side, by the Grace of God. Not quite all the way there, but at the doorway for sure, in between. It wasn't a place of delightful sights and melodious sounds and majestic odors I saw and experienced, not at all, but the other door! My former ways had been in deepest darkness, as much as I could grab hold of and glory in, even famous for it. Quite amazing to one day lay there completely paralyzed, then feel your breathing stop, then hear the heart beats pounding in your ears as it speeds up, desperate for oxygen, and then - silence! Saw and heard things I cannot/will not describe here. 25 minutes later, alone with nobody else there, heard a tremendous explosion beyond description with a brilliant flash of blinding bright light and instantly back here, in this mortal world! Heard the heart begin to gently beat again, and took that wondrous first breath of a new Life...

Rather gets one's attention.

I was also poisoned by industrial chemicals, still punished by the effects today, and for the rest of this life for sure. Over 200,000 times the 'Allowable Lifetime Exposure Limit' of some real nasty chemicals. Not good. Now somewhat better than death I'd say, marginally at times. I've made some changes in outlook, belief and actions. Next time I plan to enter by the other 'Doorway' to the other side. Having seen the Face and heard the Voice I'm assured of the reality of my tomorrows, and of the purpose and meaning of each and every 'Today'.

And these little 'Projects' we have are part of the LIVING of that Life that's been given! To do our very best in every way, and like you, to always consider others along the way in our journey, to help when we're able, to tell what we know and to encourage. That is good and right and acceptable.

From this rambling here I have a somewhat deeper feeling for other folk's 'Projects'. I know how much of LIFE is in them, beyond those bent up pipes and melted blobs and things that make a noise that's music to our ears as we fly through the wind, ever onward to all our tomorrows. Fly - soar like an eagle!

Like someone I know says, 'The most important you cannot see!'

Amen.
I luckily did not get that far, but learned the same lesson in many small portions since my first partial paralisation as a 16 year old teenie.

Yesterday I milled the 6 nests for the 52 teeth sprocket into the original Jawa sprocket base. Not beautyful, not perfect, but wiggle free.
The original wheel set up was 3mm further to the right. at switching from a right chain to the left chain I came too close to the frame. So I put a 6 mm spacer and am now back to the old wheel position. Anyhow from the beginning it was obvious that the engine never would be possible to lign up in the center line. I'll measure it tomorow, I guess its about 2 cm further to the right.
Today with my son I prepared and spot welded the front engine supports.

Tomorrow afternoon we'll bring in our friend Fernando, when he gets back from the hospital, for to decide the next steps and get his ok.
That way 2 good old pensioned friends will join us in the shop for coffee time. Fernando the Jawa importer (bad diabetis and an open not well healing wound) and Henry (heart pace maker), who prepares his sewage water treatment plant.
Good companionship is one of the things you cannot see, but value a lot.
May the ladies blame us later about having spent too much time. At least we will have had our laugh.
How long we will be here together?

Post a photo of milled nest. I'm really interested in working with these wheels and sprocket base for bike's rear and car. In the summer I will build a car for my brother, and his bike has weak rear brake. It would be good to replace it with slightly better Jawa brake and the same brake in car.

Got Fernando's "visto bueno" approovement in between coffee and cake which would have upset his wife and doctor, but we had a nice afternoon in between cables, grease and laughter...
Friday I welded the ears up.
Just forgot to buy primer and paint. A brush will have to do it, I am not fond of stripping everything down for to paint. I have done that once only for to have it scratched again within 3 weeks.
More and photos another day.

Here come the photos:
The first 4 photos are for Igor for the modification of the back sprocket. It is better to move the pockets a little backward because there is a hole in the steel sprocket filled up with aluminium and the screws might fall into it. The rubber dampener is cheap, but if You do not get a new one and have slack, then use silicone to fill up the gap.
The newly used sprocket comes from motocross with 52 teeth and is made out of hardened aluminium (German: goatiert = goatated?)
It was necessary to put a 6mm distance ring for to adjust the sprocket position back to its old alignment.

1847= cut out for the VIN number before the fresh paint softened the old one and made disappear several numbers...
1852/1853= a simple way for to relocate the gear shift lever tip.
1854/1856= recycling the old engine ears first by 3 and 8 pound Niacaraguan universal wrench = slash hammer and then with this aproximately 100 year old Lady.
1857 = Thomas got a welding spark on his head and let go. This twisted mounting ear is the result of having a youngster as helping hand. With some more experience he will have learned his lesson not to drop a job just because of some akes.
1859 = welded engine ears.
1861/63 = the break's torque rest in the back swing had to be passed to the left side too. The adjustable parallel blocks are a great help in the machine shop.

In the afternoon during a typical tropical rainstorm we painted the parts with high temperature primer and muffler paint out of a spray can. and when Thomas took off the sadle pack frame suddenly he had the shock absorber together with the eye bolt of the 4th sidecar anchour in his hand!!!! The base ear was completely ripped off!!!

What a shock. What might have happend on the road? I am happy now, that the engine gave up its soul in Oktober before we reached the Continental Division.
I don't even want to think about it, if the sidecar whould have collapsed somewhere in the mountains.
Gott sei Dank!
Sven

Today we made up a new knot plate = base plate for the right shock absorber. Not any face was parallel. As the 22mm mill did not show up the new distance tube now is 28/25mm thick in a 14mm steel plate. it fit snug in before we welded it. I guess that should last for a couple of years...

The engine guard will be something unique too. I will recycle the 6 left over brackets of the saddle bag base plates and as skid plate a loo top...
Questions? A tuff thermoplastic that is pretty slippy and there are 3 more waiting for to recycle. And when these are used up a kitchen chop board can be bent into form too.
I first wanted to use UHMW Polyethyleen, but wherefore waste for a suffering part some first class prime material that would have to be milled down.

The engine is located 10,5m ( => oups I mean 10,5mm )off center further to the right. I hope as solo that that will not affect too much. As rig it helps a little to compensate the light sidecar.
RotkΓ€ppchen will become a one of its own kind bike.

Oups, Lonnie You are right, I made the same mistake I blame frecuently my daughter for. m should say mm. The units are what count in physics.
10,5mm = 0,413" = 13/32"
I just come back from the shop where I passed the last paint layer and tomorrow I will start assembling after the "loo"-protector will be finished.

I had to chase a dozend cows and calfs out of the farm. The blind Golden Retriever got 3 times attacked and overrun by a cow. The poor inoffensive guy didn't even know what happend to him, all he wanted to know was to smell, what kind of animal was invading his terretory.

Hi Sven
Nice work, especially rear sprocket made from brake disc. I wonder how long it should live, maybe years. But without shock absorber between sprocket and hub, it will eat chains like spaghetti.
I had the same problem, because Jawa hub is very wide, and sprocket-hub in Jawa is thin aluminium. So I used front wheel from other bike and made a rear hub from front one. It also changed drum brake to disc one. Here you have article: http://grzegorski.net/wiki/doku.php?id=moto:pannonia_budowa#wersja_2 In Polish, but photos should show everything needed.

P.S. There was very nice to hear you.
Igor
