Terraplane Sidecar mounting to a 1982 GL1100 Aspencade
Would anyone have photos or a description of mounting a Terraplane Sidecar to a Honda GL1100. I have a GL 1100 Aspencade and just bought a Terraplane sidecar, it didn't have bike mounts but I found some NOS mounts but they didn't have instructions.
Thanks
Dan

Hi Dan,
When you say NOS mounts, do you mean GL1100 mounts supplies by Vetter? Be careful of "Generic" or "Universal" mounts. I put a set of universal strap-type mounts (large U-shaped plate steel with an end cap that one screwed a bolt into). The lower mount ended up rotating around the lower frame rail, gauging it rather severly.
Check with Jay at dmcsidecars.com. He set me up with the bike mounts and the adjustable clamps and bosses to make it all work right.
Oh, and welcome to the forum!
If strap type frame clamps are used and there is a chance of slippage (rotation) I have used a spot weld or two on the strap to prevent this. Easily removed with a die grinder later if the sidecar is removed.
Some sidecar manufacturere have also recommended this solution.
Never drill a hole to bolt or pin the attachment as it will weaken the frame. I had an overloaded Beemer rig (headed for Alaska's North Slope from LA) come into the shop with alignment problems. He had stopped at a shop in Oregon where they drilled through the frame tube and bolted the front mount in place. There were two 1/2" slots in the frame tube from where the hardened (grade 8) 1/4" bolt was working back and forth. We were both glad he stopped by for me to check his sidecar alignment.

The mounts ordered are from us, They are NOS Vetter mounts which are 100% bolt on and come with the bike specific lower mounts called pylons by Vetter. We sell all of the NOS vetter mounts we have for $150 for the mount set. What you get is the two lower mounts, two pylons and the upper trim grip mount. We sell them with out bolts, or instructions as I do not have the instructions and as such I do not have list of what bolts are needed. I also tell people they will look lik they have been stored poorly for 30 years as they for a while before I owned them were stored in a barn. On the GL1100 once you hold the mounts up to the frame it will become clear where they go. The largest mount is the front lower mount. The smallest is the trim grip mount. BTW as Vetter used 5/8 inch hiem joints on the bottom lower mounts Vetter mounts will work on many other sidecars for the two lower mounts and can be a very cost effective way of putting a sidecar on a bike. However Vetter did not make mounts for any bike newer then 1983. We however can supply mounts for many newer bikes for the Vetter by converting it over to a standard 4 point adjustable mount. Once this is done the sidecar will work with most of our mount sets.

I would like to Thank everyone for their tips and suggestions. I had purchase the bike mounts from Jay at DMC Sidecar he was upfront and told me they came without instructions and some hardware. Jay was very helpful, and had given me some insight on how to mount the sidecar. I was checking to make sure I was on the track and to see if anyone had some suggestions.
Thanks
Dan

Hey Dan,
Since you are getting the same mounts that I got from Jay, I'd be happy to send you some pics of my mounts showing you the hardware and mounting techniques I used.

Hello. I also have an 1100 goldwing and am in the process of mounting a sidecar to it. I just found this forum and am a new member. I would appreciate some closeups of the mounting points on the gl1100 frame. thanks in advance.

Hi Vertol, Welcome to the forum and to sidecars!
Are you using Vetter clevis plates to mount your car? If not, then the pics wouldn't help you much. One thing I can tell you is to avoid the generic "universal" mounts. It learned that the hard way.
Good luck with your rig and don't be afraid to ask questions!

I will look into the Vetter mounts. I would still like to see where on your frame you attached the mounts. I'm ptetty Jazzed about getting this thing mounted. I live in B.C Canada but I'm working in Afghanistan and won't be home again until mid November.
Cheers
Once you are back in country if you need any help let us know we are located near Seattle. There is also a sidecar club in B.C. called the Big Foot sidecar club. They have events in both Canada and the USA.
And like I have already posted we own all of the NOS vetter mounts $150 or is any one wants to corner the market on Vetter mounts we would sell all we have for $1000 which is about 300 or so mount sets.
