hey all. newbie here with a question about sidecar installation. I've installed a 562 velorex on my 79 gl 1000 goldwing. how Close or far should the hack be installed to the scoot itself? Is there a rule of thumb.

The farther away from the bike, the more stable. Especially true when you mount something that light onto a bigger bike.

Thanks for the info Mike. Would there be anyone here who has a similar set up ( velorex 562 and 79 gl1000) who has installation pics they wouldn't mind sharing with this rookie.

My first rig was a 78 wing with a velorex on it. It is a very light sidecar and will come up quite easy. It will also heel over quite a bit in left handers due to the soft suspension on the sidecar.
If you are going to proceed with thsi setup mount the car as far out as possible which will help stability some. If you use the velorex mounts keep an eye on especially the lower one on the sidecar frame. If it is not positioned in such a way to not allow it to rotate it will. A reference mark on it and th eframe is a good idea after you have everything setup. You can use th estrp clamps on the wing frame. Try and spread them out as far as possible and try and keep the eyebolts in line with the struts to help prevent roatation of the clamps on th ebike frame.
Sorry,I do not have any pictures.
Don't want to sound like a jerk but I would not even mount this combination unless some mods were made to the sidecar suspension and some weight added to it. By the same token I would feel like a real jerk if something happened and I never did say anything along these lines. You have been warned:-)
I put a lot of miles on that rig of ours and have to say the sidecar wheel was off the ground as much as on it. Be careful with it and do not get overconfident.

Trev,
I'm e-mailing you a couple of GL/Velorex install pix.
This was a 700 but the mounting positioning is the same.
Especially note the rear lower mount placement.
A suggestion: upgrade the rear suspension to a 1" axle.
A couple of 1"x5"x28" steel plates (80#) mounted between the body and frame of the sidecar are also very useful.
