Sidecar and reverse for GL1100 Interstate
I have somebody need info about good sidecar for GL1100 Interstate. Any advice about mount locations? Also he need to know how to make reverse gear or gismo for it. I remember some info about starer motor turning sidecar wheel? Any ideas?

I tried it on my leaner rig and it somewhat worked. I used GL1100 starter motor and 2" OD butane rubber wheel from McMaster-Carr. My sidecar wheel is 8" trailer tire. I made crude mechanism to push the rubber wheel against the tire tread. GL starter had planetary reduction gears built in and that helped but the overall reduction ratio was not as high as I hoped for. For rigid rigs, sidecar wheel will be much larger so that will help. Engagement is per toggle clamp. I had to get off the bike to operate it. Not so convenient. I only tested it in a garage and never used in real life.
With better design, I think it will work.
We make mounts for the GL1100, I put over 150K on a GL1100 with a sidecar. One issue many people have when they go to make mounts for the older GL's is that they end up having the upper rear mount higher then the upper front mount. When this is done when you fine tune your lean out, you end up changing your toe setting the wrong way. So if you have a pull to the right, you would lean the bike to the left, which causes more toe out which in turn causes more pull to the right making it very hard to fine the sweet spot where ever thing works well. Our mount for the lower rear ends up behind the main frame and under the exhaust pipe.
As to the sidecar, you need a strong heavy sidecar, I would not go with a Velorex, spirit eagle, cozy or any of the other small light sidecars for smaller bikes. Any of the made in the USA sidecars will work fine including the ones we make.
If you do not have any physical limitations I think you will find that backing up a bike with a sidecar is so much easier then backing up a bike with out that reverse is not really needed. When we do have customer who must have reverse there are many ways to go about doing a reverse. Starter motors work as do winch motors. We have examples of electric reverse set ups in our shop right now, One is done waiting for the bike to be picked up (double amputee) the other is still being devleoped but should be done in a day or two (quadrapegic who will ride from his chair)

The URAL, Dnepr and CJ sidecars also work well if you desire a steel car and can get one for a decent price.

Thanks for info. Jay do you have some pictures of examples of electric reverse set ups in you shop right now?
We have one in the shop right now that we use an acutuator to lower a motor with a wheel and tire on it to the ground.
