Claude, I keep thinking of the factory reverse on the Ural. As you know, it is gear driven, which I really liked. Oh well, maybe that new Chinese rig will pan out.

This discussion sparked my curiousity and I went to the URAL web site to see if they had a reverse on their "Wolf" Model, which is the only one without the sidecar (but presumably the same motorcycle). The answer to the question was that they do not have a reverse. All of the URALs with sidecars have a reverse, in addition to four foward gears, so it would appear that they've disabled it on the "Wolf".

The Chinese CHANG JIANG with a sidecar, which is another 1930s BMW clone, also features four forward gears and a reverse, according to their parent web site. But they have a number of models and I didn't scan through them all. Some of the CHANG JIANG models only have kick starters, so one has to be ready for a much older technology with one of these.

actually - i run in 6th quite a bit with my sidecar - if im solo on the two lane back roads its mostly 5th gear - some 6th depending on wind etc.. but shifting down to 5th happens a lot.

but on the freeway with the cruise set in 6th at 80 - it has plenty of power and is not lugging 5th gear its screaming.

so 6th on a ultra with a sidecar is actually very useful in minnesota - its first gear that is too tall.

in hillier areas i think that 6th would be too tall.

I'm hoping the new Chinese Jialing turns out to be a good rig.Hopefully new technology, etc, and of course, hopefully it gets imported. As i type this, i realize there is alot of "hope" involved.

Never thought about 1st being too tall. On my V Strom, i have geared it down a bunch, easy with a chain/sprocket. The Wing has so much torqe it doesn't matter. Sounds like a 6 spped, with different sprockets might be a good setup, other the requirement to have an 07 model, and the cost of the reverse gear.
