So i have my new alternator in place but i am struggling to line it up. New rubber spacers fitted to engine, dowels removed, o ring oiled.

Is there a knack to it or just pure dumb luck. Had enough today with other stuff time for coffee and rest

Steve,  for  most it is just plain  luck.

But.....a helpful  trick is to lube those new rubber spacers with a SilGlide, or silicone,  or any  grease, so that the  metal  of the  new alternator can easily slide into the  groves between the  rubber  spacers.

The REAL sign of maturity is knowing when to walk away from a frustration and when to return.

Yeah, I'm still learning that...

Its in!!! nice dose of morning fresh brain, once i realized that the casting of the middle bolt lines up perfectly with the slot in the rubber it was much easier. Wing starts and shows13.82 on tick over and the battery stayed fully charged all the time it was disconnected.

Can't argue with 13.8!  Now, you still gonna try to go to the Rally?  Without the triple trees, might be a good idea to drive.  In a car. Nobody would fault you.

Steve,  did you  lube up the  rubber  spacers like  I  suggested,  or....shove it  in there Bone Dry ?

My opinion.....button  up everything  that  was involved with the  electrical  issue, get a couple  good nights  sleep,  then take  2 days to pilot  that rig to the  Sidecar  Rally.

Oh, and  CONGRATS  on solving the  primary issue,  replacing the  alternator, and learning  so much  in the  process.  clap

Miles. no got some grease and oiled the o ring etc. I had already dipped the rubbers in clean motor oil the day before. I have no intention of doing it in one go for sure. I can keep going, will the wing =)

Yes, the 1500 Wing will  live...longer than  most of us.  You have  just  replaced  one of the  very  few Achilles  Tendons  of that  bike.  The new alternator will  last another  100,000 miles.

Steve, congratulations on your doing the job on the wing.   I’m looking forward to seeing you and my old bike @ the rallye.  I’m also leaving Tuesday.    I  once had a 1988 gl1500 and the alternator finally died while I was up in Newfoundland.  That was back in 1998.  Talk about a deserted place to get help!   But a great guy at a little mechanic shop ( for cars & trucks) tore into it and found a bushing in the rear housing had worn till the armature was making contact w/ the stator.  I was fortunate in that all it needed was to get a new bronze bushing in the housing and he had one that was for a starter motor that he machined down on his little lathe.     Later on in that same trip I crashed on a wet slippery wooden bridge up in Labrador.  It tore up the bike pretty good but I was able to duck tape & baling wire it back together and about 3 weeks later made it home.  I lived in Savannah Ga back in those days.  Ins. Co. totaled the bike & let me keep it.  I bought a 1998 gl1500.  So I had been told that the early 1500s were notorious for alternators giving up pre-maturely. ( between 35k to about 70k.) mine was at about 50+k.   Also, my 2004 1800 alternator let go about a year ago near Cleveland Tenn. ( on a Sunday nite of all times).  ( most M/C shops are closed on Monday).  Ended up having to get a roll back to carry me to Hendersonville NC. (1200.00 tow bill).( M/cycle w/ sidecar towing lee-sur-lite camper trailer).    Schroders Honda overnite a new alternator and had me going by Wednesday. So why do we do this stuff???   I think we are a little touched basic_smile Head Explody

@none Steve, PM me with your route plan.  We plan to leave Tuesday from Central Nebraska and will likely overnight in Willow Springs MO.  Looks like a fairly easy day 2 to Iuka from there if you want to meet up and have a tailgunner.
