HD FLHRI w/ TLE (How much weight can the car hold?) and oil filter change?
Hello,
I just picked up my 1st full size rig, my last one was a 62 BMW R60/2 w/ 58 BMW Spezial SideCar.
What a treat to have a rig with power. But now I have some questions about figuring out how much weight the TLE can carry? In the owners manual it states GAWR for the TLE is 300 LBS? So what does that translate to?
So am I correct in figuring this out?
Sidecar empty is 234lbs, gross axle is 300lbs so its designed to carry 66lbs?
or
GAWR rear cyle axle weight 827
GAWR TLE axle weight -300
527 lbs total weight?
Or do I add the GAWR front and Rear and then subtract the TLE 300lbs GAWR? ie
GAWR Front 550
GAWR Rear+827
ttl 1377
GAWR TLE -300
1077 lbs?
Confused 😉
TIA,
John
Next question is how can I get the oil filter out? It looks like the frame bracket for the rig is in the way? Can I just remove the soft clutch cable support and hold the cable out of the way? Would that give me enough room?
TIA
My 230# husband is a passenger sometimes and the "chair" handles that with NO problems. On my 06 E-Glide I have to move the rear master cylender resivoir out of the way to change the oil filter, 2 scrwes and it's clear. Hope this helps...
Thank you, being 6'2" 280 I was hoping that it would hold me as I have never ridden in the chair , I was awlays the driver......
Hmmm the rear master cylinder is on the right side on the other side of the oil filter body I do not think that it will work. I will have to go out and look again.....

You'll be OK with a 300# dog or mother-inlaw in the boat.
The factory max also has some wiggle room over that amount but the 300# figure is to limit their legal liability.
Lonnie
Keg of beer would be the best :-0
Thanks!
Now for one more question, how the heck do you get into the damn thing? I see the footstep but is seems pretty useless and whith the windshield on the boat it seems to make it harder.
All tips greatly appreciated.
TIA,
JOhn

When we installed the chair the kit contained a resivoir relocation kit & different rear brake pedal amongst other stuff.
the wheel can carry 300 lb - about half the wt of the sidecar is on the sidecar wheel, about 1/3 of whats left is on the front and 2/3 of whats left is on the rear...
so if the sidecar plus rider is 600. thats 300 on the sidecar wheel, 100 on the front wheel and 200 on the rear wheel of the bike.
the gvwr of a harley with sidecar is 1600 lb - thats total gross vehicle wt.
where you really need to watch it is its very very easy to exceed the capacity of the bike rear wheel. you CAN haul three people but the lighter passenger has to be on the back of the bike and the heavy passenger goes in the sidecar... ive seen many with the wife on the back and a kid in the sidecar - asking for a rollover that is. i realize its politics and wives can be, uh, uncooperatave when it comes to reality vs what they want reality to be - but that goes every which way right?
as for the oil filter - IF the sidecar is properly installed per the sidecar maint manual there is just exactly enough room to get the filter out - just exactly - it will rub on the cylinder, frame, cable, sidecar mount on the way out - but it wlll fit.
however if the installer didnt have all the proper parts and just fudged, or did not rtfm the front mount could be mounted too high - if thats the case - then there is no way to get the filter out. i have seen two in the last year that obviously were bought used without all the parts - wrong mounts, wrong brake parts, etc etc
if its done properly the clutch cable goes down the left side of the frame and then under the engine from left to right - the cross bolt on the front mount clears the voltage regulator by exactly 1/16" the rear brake pedal is changed, the oil pressure switch is moved, the rear master cyl is actually replaced by a remote unit.
good luck

Thank you, I will have to post a pix of the oil filter and mounts when I have a chance. The bike has had its first oil change at the dealer so I suspect that it should come out. It will be tight also will have to make somthing to catch the oil when I pull the filter off so it does not get in the front motor mount.
So the TLE weighs 234 lbs ( http://www.totalmotorcycle.com/photos/2006models/2006models-Harley-Davidson-TLESidecar.htm ) and I subtract that from 600 to get the weight it can handle which would be 366 lbs correct?
I'd be a little concerned on my 04 the rear master cyl reservoir is also mounted on a bracket between the two downtubes similar to what Jane mentioned. Maybe someone neglected that? I would think the reservoir is part of the install kit. It's a tight squeeze getting the filter out. The worst thing is the oil runs out of the filter as you're trying to get it off.
prior to 07 the rear brake rez was mounted behind the welded frame cross piece - it does make the filter a extra b*&. after 07 the rez is thinner and wider and is mounted to the welded frame cross piece on the front of the frame. better deal.
i got tired of the whole filter drama, i got tired of the whole "cant do a cooler with a sidecar" drama. so i purchased a jerry rigs remote oil filter kit and mounted the oil filter to the front of the right crash bar and mounted the oil cooler there as well - its between the bike and sidecar - out in the wind, oil change is a breeze and it works & best of all no more oil on the front engine mount.
it would figure that the number one cause of a failed front engine mount is engine oil - its not oil proof. and the mount is under the filter. with a sidecar you have to pull the filter out laying on its side making a giant mess.
