H-D right side fairing lower

I had a set of fairing lowers on my FLHT, but I had to remove them when I installed the TLE sidecar. I don't mind riding without them during the warmer weather, but with winter approuching. I want to put them back on. I know with the sidecar mounts, I can't put the right side fairing lower on without modifing it first. Are there any problems doing this, or should I just order a new one made for use with a sidecar?

been there, tried that, it was a expensive total waste of time made a perfectly good part into landfill fodder... the proper one goes on from the FRONT of the crash bar after the sidecar is installed & have a joint just below the bar - the whole top is a seperate part - the non sidecar parts go on from the BACK.. & just have a small cover over the bolts.

- you are best off on getting the proper parts.

they show on ebay fairly regular or a GOOD parts man at the dealer can get you the parts & all the itty bitty bolts and clips needed. they will paint match to any stock color.

Thanks for the info Timo482. I've took off and put on the lowers many times. Although they've been off since I got the sidecar. Looks like I'll have to order the right part. For some reason I didn't think it'd be as easy as just cutting away extra plastic and bolting it on. I'm glad I asked questions before I ruined a perfectly good part.

I don't know how the TLE mounts but the Liberty took only a slight bit of modification to the lower and it works fine. Lost the use of that fairing pocket but that's no big deal at all.

This has come up before. The Ultra sidecar lower comes in the crate with a new Ultra sidecar. I've mentioned before that I've not been able to find a part number for it since it's a part of the connection kit. 87166-99B is the last part number I've seen for the entire kit. I'm sure that number has been changed now that the 96" bikes have come out with a new frame. It's probably 87166-99C now for the whole kit.

I got my Ultra sidecar lower from eBay. Mine was new and unpainted. You will find them on eBay periodically.

The Liberty setup is totally different from the standard HD TLE/TLE Ultra connections. The stock lower can't be modified to fit on the TLE sidecar because of the shape of the front bow and the presence of the steering damper.

As TIMO482 says, don't try it or you will have some high priced scrap on your hands.

and the WORST part is that i could have sold the stock one for about what the new one cost

so it cost me even MORE since when i traded in the bike i had to REPLACE the one i had cut up..

sheesh - that was sure a expensive lesson.. the one i took off my new ultra is in a box wrapped in paint protector with all the other bits i took off - when i sell the thing i have all the itty bitty parts to make it all stone stock.

[note - harleys are worth at least 10% more if stone stock at sale - all non hd part number mods lower the apprased value by the cost to take it to stock at dealer rates - so KEEP EVERYTHING!]

just get the right part - its cheaper

I missed out on a bunch of odd parts since I bought my sidecar used. This is my first sidecar rig, and it's been a learning experience. The local H-D dealership doesn't know a thing when it comes to sidecars. Hopefully that part number you mentioned will help me out.

everything you need is in the harley parts manual

the real problem is if the parts man is in a hurry or unwilling to spend the time to learn how to search properly

its all there - the parts man just has to try a bit

It's cerainly true that a stock bike will bring more at trade-in or even on a sale. It does little good to tell someoone that your engine "has been rebuilt" with less than 20,000 miiles on the bike. It puts the whole issue into question regarding overall condition.

Even with customized bikes, the owner seldom recoups anywhere near the cost of the so-called "upgrades".

Like TIMO482 and others I learned a bitter lesson about modifying bikes.

It's really best to get the right parts and use them. It's also more satisfying.

I got the alternate lower when I bought my hack, but I don't like them. I know my FLHRCI runs hotter dragging the tub around....and the lower that came with the sidecar is un-vented. I have a pair of nylon "Elephant Ears" I snap on when it gets cold...I love them!
