I just recently picked up a '78 Goldwing with a yet to be identified sidecar attached. The GW currently has Avon tires that need to be replaced. I did a couple of searches on tires but didn't find what I was looking for as in what are some other good choices for replacement tires?.

When my wife is in the sidecar it pulls to right quite badly but it is ok when I am solo. Is this strictly an alignment problem or do I need to increase the spring rate on the sidecar?

Any help would be appreciated,
Dave

Dave,
Post a shot or two of the sidecar here for identifying it.
Just edit your post and check "Attach a file to this thread after posting".
If your sidecar tire wear pattern is even, just add some lean-out to the bike. Adjust the upper struts to make the bike lean away from the sidecar to make the rig pull more to the left. It may feel odd for a bit, like you are leaning to the left but the rig will actually be more vertical on normally crowned roads.

Looks like a Sputnik. They are known for having soft shocks, but I'd guess it's a lean adjustment.

Thanks for the identification. There are no identifying marks on the sidecar at all but when I looked up Sputnik what I have jumped out.

Thanks,
Dave

It is a Sputnik andyou do need stiffer sidecar suspension.

That sidecar was designed for a much smaller bike, you probably could use some ballast when riding without a passenger.

The ballast I figured out real quick the day I road it home.

What is the best way to stiffen things up?

Thanks,
Dave

I'm going to try and adjust the upper struts to stand the bike up more this weekend. How much at a time would you suggest adjusting them?

Thanks,
Dave

Honestly, the best way is to go to a bike salvage yard and find a shock with the same length and mounting but either a heavier spring or larger diameter body.
When Sheldon Aubut had his Guzzi, he had a sidecar mounted on a Sputnik frame. I'm almost certain he used a Ural shock to stiffen it up. I may see him tomorrow, if so I'll try to remember to ask.
