We all know powder coat it works but has limits.  I had a set of Black heat shields that had seen their better days pass. Decided to try VHT ceramic paint.

Already knowing most High temp black paint tends to look more gray when dry.cured.

320 sanded the heat shields . And got ready VHT Ceramic paint is not just spray and done. Because of the sanding I used the gray primer first.

Light coat wait 10 minutes. Second light coat wait 10 minutes. Medium coat.  Wait 10 -30 minutes

Light coat black wait 10 minutes . Second light coat wait 10 minutes medium coat. Wait 30 minutes .

Then do the same as the rest with clear Satin.

Let pain dry 7 days. I stored it in area at steady 75 to 80 degrees. You do not want it to dry to fast.

Time to cure the paint.  250 degrees for 30 minutes. Allow to cool 30 minutes.

400 degrees for 30 minutes allow to cool 30 minutes.

600 degrees for 30 minutes allow to cool.

During the process they paint will change in appearance. Ignore it that just finish . If you are not committed to doing it right . Don't even start.

It will end up a waste of time and money. The paint is $12-19 dollars a can one of each did this project. A factory set of the same heat shields is $281 dollars. I just wanted to try this. The painted ones will be put on my Bike when it get home. This paint is designed to directly paint headers also. For them the curing can be done on the vehicle.

The paint is not fully Chemical resistant until cured.

Finished product stands up to 1300-2000 degrees and is a ceramic coating.

Nice work, looks like it was well worth the effort of taking the time to do it right. I need to repaint all the lower heat shields on Monica's trike, I may have to give this process a go. just have to figure out the heating it part

@aceinsav

I use an oven most go to 550 on high. Mess with thermostat on some you can get them up another 50. They claim you can do some of it with a heat gun.

I don't think Monica would like me baking paint in her oven 😏  I do have a nice heat gun and used it some when curing the paint on the sidecar when I added the chrome strip but you have to be so careful not to boil the paint. Still going to look into it

Bring it over to my house.  I’ll cook it for you if it will fit in a regular oven.

Decided I prefer the look of blued stainless.

That's way to fussy for me but thanks for telling about it.
