Double Seat to a Single Seat?
My 81 Goldwing has a double person seat, which is standard, I would like, at some later time, to replace it with a single person seat and use that gained area to mount a much larger capacity trunk. Does anyone know who makes a single person seat for the 81 Goldwing or is this something that will have to be custom made? I do have a spare double person seat, the seat pan, that can be used and/or modified if needed for a custom job.
I have an 81 wing in the shop now that I plan to get the double seat made into a single. You should be able to have that done locally. If you want to ship your spare here I could have it done along with mine though. Just a thought. Feel free to give me a call at 570 765 8310

on my last 2 rigs I have cut off the rear portion of the double saddle knife and saber saw. and took it to a local bike seat guy to be reshaped and recovered. both turned out super.
I kept the seat latch and hinges on both,,,the /5 and the Kbike.
i use a harley police seat - its so simple id bet you could adapt it.
its designed for all day comfort - and has about 1.5" of spring in the little air bag at the back

I went back from a single seat to a double seat (the original for my 1971 CB 750 4) The single
seat was simply a cut down double seat. I wanted the double seat because It was for a shorter person and caused my knees to ache. I just put the double seat on today so will let you know if that helped my problem. Jim in Denver

Bob: Could you possibly, either send the contact information for the person who did your seat, to me or have them contact me? I may very well be in the market at the end of this riding season, or depending on cost, I have a spare seat I could ship to their local as soon as those funds are available. We have no reliable source for this type of apolstry here abouts and no one could recommend someone who could either.

Jim in Denver: I'm not sure about the differences in seat to foot positions of your CB750/4 and a Goldwing 1100 I, nor if yours is a bench seat or in my case a double captains seat or just that you may have longer legs than my 29 1/2 in. inseam legs, but I don't feel like my legs are cramped, however I do feel I am a bit short in that respect, when it comes to touching the ground with both feet, when I am at a stop. Due to my disabilities, I have had to install a sidecar in order to continue riding and once the seat is modified, their is also the added space in which to move the seat back a bit, with a little further modification of the seat mounts, should it be necessary.
I also have a 79 Honda CX500 Custom, that dose have a bench seat. I find the seat a bit slippery when hard acceleration is applied. I would also much prefer a captain chair seat on it as well, but for it's resale value as stock, I will keep it as is, for the present time. Anyone in the market, it's in good running order, but could use a good paint job? For those that don't know, the Honda CX500 Custom used the Transverse V engine and a mono top rail frame and was only built a few years. It's been said it was the forerunner to the Goldwing along with the GL500/650 or original Silverwing, these also used the Transvers V engine and has in it's own right, a hard core following. You either love them or hate them type of relationship I am told.
Why would I sale it then? The cost of mounting a sidecar to it requires a strong subframe that costs half again as much as the value of the motorcycle is today and with out some sort of stabilizing force when stopped or during mounting and dismounting, I risk having the motorcycle falling over and I am not able to pick it back up again with my disabilities...enough said.

I went back to a double seat (an original bench seat for my 1971 Honda 750 4 K1) and it did solve my problems with my knees. My inseam is only about 30 1/2 but for some reason being able to sit a little further back worked wonders for my knees. Perhaps it is the Arthritus that is catching up
with me. Tomorrow will mark the 3 week anniversity of my purchase of the Hondasauras and I did reach the 300 mile mark. I am really thrilled with the rig and I may be selling my little 250 Rebel in a month or so if the thrill continues to grow. I just can't wait to fire up the rig and run my errands.
One really gets a lot of attention from the public when you ride one of this things. Jim - Denver

Bob: I Checked out backinthesaddleseats.com and if you can believe his web site, he has more work than he can handle. I did fire off an Email to him but haven't heard back as of yet, so maybe their is some truth in what your heard. I may just have to wait and see if he answers or I'll just have to keep my eyes and ears open for someone else who can do such a modification of my motorcycle seat. Thanks for the info and photos anyway.

I used an '83 GL500I Silverwing Interstate to mule my sidecar for over 100.000 miles. Was a pretty good tug given the abuse I heaped on it over the years. Since I tip the scale at well in excess of 300 lbs. and tended to load up the chair on my longer trips it wasn't a great highway runner since it would top out at full throttle aroung 60 mph. I built my own subframe (actually a few of them) for it and it served well. You might give Claude Stanley a call though as he knows a gent up his way that made mounts for a GL/CX that might be available or reproduced faily inexpensively. Worth looking into.
