Hi, my first post here. I bought an 83 wing with a Califorina side car last july and my hubby has been trying to find out if a car tire will work on it. Most of what I have read says that it wont, then I saw here that you said you had a solution on the way. I was just wondering what it was and if it it worked. We realy love the rig but would also like to find a way to keep rubber on it longer and cheaper. Any help will be greatly appreaciated, thanks
Your Wing is a different horse as it runs a 16" rear tire just like my 82 GL1100. I haven't read any bad stories on here or other hack sites about problems fitting 16" car tires on bikes. I haven't put one on mine yet as I haven't found the tire I like for under a 100 bucks.
The problem is finding a 16 that will fit in between the swing arm and be the right OD,,Good Luck.

This is the problem with the older wings. We are just about setup to do wheels for just abou tany bike but it looks as though pricing will be over $1000. These wheels will have no welding to them but rather a newly machined hub with a car wheel attached in a modular fashion.
These new wheels will be a modular design which means if you were to bend or damage a rim only that part of the assembly would have to be replaced. We feel THAT is much better than having to replace the whole wheel.
We do sell Stroker's wheels also. They are called 'advanatage wheels' and are based on a centerline aluinum wheel. There is no welding on these wheels. David H. owner of advantage wheels only makes them for the BMW 1100 / 1150 GS models.
On the 1800 Wings a 195/55x16 tire will mount right onto the stock wheel and you are ready to go. This tire in no way will fit within the swing arm of an older wing.

So true. I just wish that anyone that has mounted a CT on an 82-83 1100 would chime in with their experience with it and brand/size tire they used. I can't afford to just be buying tires to experiment with.

I also wish someone would find a 16" CAR tire that would work with this application.
Some have used the antique design motorcycle tires from Coker tire but that didn't seem to do that well.
Used to be able to get the twin tires but that source dried up. Even if some were found today the age of them woudl raise a question about whether to use them or not.
If the setup is good and hot rodding is kept to a minumum one should be able to get 8 - 10,000 miles out of a motorcycle tire. (K 491 Dunlop, Dunlop Police Tire, Metzler ME880, ??).
To invest in a wheel conversion for these older Wings is a big decision.
There's a tire that on the dark side someone thought would work,( the key word is "thought") because of it's size configuration, it is used on a Lotus Elite and costs,,,,,$198 and it's a over seas, UK I think, tire supplier so by the time it got here it could be second mortgage time.
You can check on this info to make sure I got right here:

Yea, Claude, I've looked at the tires over at the Coker site and wasn't impressed at all with the choice or the prices. I called Dauntless a couple of months ago and they had a used front leading link setup, the CT setup for the front and rear, used for 2500. Way out of my price range for now.

The earlier wings with the comstar wheels were not that hard to convert to a 15" car wheel to run a car tire. The stock hub coudl be retained, plates made to go from there out to the new rim and all was well. Many used steel wheels and even steel plates. Yep, very heavy but inexpensive and doable. I still have one front wheel today, weighs a ton.
The 165s were extremely tight clearance wise. Using the 135 in the front lowered things and actually reduced trail some. The 135, 145, 155, and 165 tires would all work in the rear in most cases.
You are up against a different animal with your newer goldthing. I woudl probably say that money wise the best thing to do is purchase a decent motorcycle tire and concentrate on getting your setup dialed in as good as possible and then just riding the thing.
Yea, I'm running E-3's on it now and love them. The rear I put on last fall and has about 12,000 on it now and just beginning to show some wear. I think I'll stick with them for now and see how they do when I get the hack mounted up.

I'll show my ignorance and ask what's a E3
Dunlop Elite III motorcycle tires, replaces the Elite II/491.
Expect around 6K+ rear tire with a hack. You'll still get good mileage on the front.

Wish I got 6K on my E3's. First tire was toast at about 4800, second at about 4500, but afailed bearing caused some weird wear pattern. Have a Motorvation Formula I hack, and we do a lot of fast (70-80) speeds at high (100-115F) temps here in the desert. Finally decided to bite the bullet, and sent my rear wheel to Kosman a couple weeks ago. Just picked up a 165R15 Vredstein from Coker. Should get put together next week in time for the 1000 mile round trip to the Griffith Park Rally 1st week in Nov; sure hope it all fits...
I was considering the Griffith Park Run but since it's been moved to November I'll pass this year. Hallowe'en weekend is the time for the first winter blizzard to blow over the Sierra Nevada and onto Hiway 395.
We came real close to not making it back home on Hallowe'en in 2003. We came out of Death Valley at 68 degrees. Lone Pine was 32 degrees at 6:00 AM the next morning and all the passes were closed. Bridgeport was at 12 degrees when we arrived and 0 at 6:00 AM. The snow started blowing sideways and we go as far as Gardenerville, NV then were snowed in. We had to leave out rigs there at a motel for 3 days.
We were headed for South Tahoe which got a record 27 inches of snow that day.
(Say hello to Doug B. for me.)
