changing paint color...?
Hello to all...once I have the quick disconnect in place I plan on matching paint of bike to car (HD Rig).
My question is do I have to go to bear car to do this or is it possible to paint over original color if so
anyone, builders or painters out there have the steps to do so...That's all for now Thanks for your time...=)
If you have a tight finish on the car now you can lightly sand the surface to degloss it and spot fill any rock chips. Lightly sand, preferably wet, with 400 paper. Clean surfaces with a tack cloth and apply a coat of primer surfacer to seal the surface and start your color coat or coats. If you need to touch sand the surfacer be sure not to break through the finish film.
The Harley factory finishes are acrylic lacquer topped with urethane clear so using them could possibly cause problems, depending upon the finish that is presently on your sidecar.
If your sidecar is of US manufacture it probably has an acrylic lacquer or acrylic enamel finish but many offshore manufacturers use a softer alkyd enamel which can soften and lift when painted over with lacquer based paints and thinners.
If unsure of the present type of paint on your sidecar I would recommend having your Harley color (s) matched with an acrylic enamel or urethane based paint. This will not wrinkle or lift and can be clear coated with urethane for a super glossy wet look finish.
BTW: If it is a Harley car with the original finish, check for clear coat lifting or peeling.
If present you are better off sanding off the clear coat down to the base color coat then repainting with the H-D paint system.
