'89 R100GS - adding a Ural hack
Just thought I'd throw this out there to see if anyone has any experience with a hack on an airhead GS.
I should be taking delivery of a Ural sidecar that was previously mounted on an '89 GS which is what I have. So, mounting it should be not to big of a deal.
But I was wondering about the GS itself. It's pretty stock with the exception of a Fox rear airshock.
Do I need to consider any other mods to make it more road and off-road worthy? My front end is my primary concern but there may be other issues I'm overlooking.
Thanks in advance for the help.
I don't have any direct experience with your setup, but is the hack coming with a subframe for your GS? I believe that all BMWs after the /2 need a subframe of some sort, and perhaps the monolever/paralever bikes more than the dual sided swingarms of the 70s/80s.
You'll probably need a steering damper. The steering difficulty can be addressed after you've spent some saddle time with the hack on the side. One can always retrofit front end mods if needed.

Probably, most likely, will have a little headshake at lower speeds. You may or may not find that an objection. Also, the 21" front tire will break traction pretty easily in left handers but it is not too bad under normal riding once you get used to it.
It will also be tippy in left handers due to the tall stance and typical dual sport type suspension. We, as a rule, install anti-swaybars on these types of rigs.
Thanks for the advice. Which leads me to a couple more questions.
First, where do you think I can get a steering damper?
Second, Claude mentions installing anti-swaybars. Do you know where I can get these or are they custome made?
Thanks for the help so far.
