Hello all, I am looking at getting a bit more ump from my 2006 Road King. I have looked into making some changes, yet I dont want to break the bank. anyone have any suggestions on my current options all include air breather/exhaust/tuner:

1. 88 to 95 - change jugs / pistons / cams (stock kit)

2. 88 to 95 and or 103 - split case go to hydraulic lifters/high compression pistons/reworked heads/cams/oil pump / change gearing on the final drive

3. just do the basic air breather/exhaust/tuner and add cams to increase low/mid range torque

I am open to any past experience knowledge.... 1. $2700 2. $4-8000 3. $800 - 1200 these are quotes from several local HD dealers.

When I upgraded my 2010 rig to a 103 I put my take off parts on Craigslist. Sold everything for $150. (with only3,600 miles on the motor). I was glad to get rid of them and the buyer was delighted. Check some Harley forums ( or swap meets) for take off parts.
I don't know of any cams that increase low end. Most all raise the RPM range to get more power.

ok.... the dealer was saying use a 210 cam... would help with the low end.

I just went to SS gear drive cams, I think it was the 510g, found out it won't work right without increasing compression. No power where I need it. Switching back to stock cams tomorrow.
My mechanic says big bore is the way to go.

you could check on after market big bore kits.or if you go with the ss gear drive cam set you could probably raise comp.with heads off a used harley motor.tons of parts and motors sitting in junk yards just waiting to be used.1 thing i would avoid is a ss carb.they are great if you wanna race but for daily use they are a waste of time and money.

255 cams are the best profile for heavy bikes

but that wont fit on a 88 inch bike

if you do bigger bore etc - get the crank fixed first - especially if you stroke it , then get the new crank trued, pluged, welded

the old saying is there is no substitute for cubic inches - but my 96 has plenty of cubes

if you already have gear drives in there - there ARE gear drive cams that are close to the 255 and those are well known for being a super low end cam.

you can spend a LOT of bucks chasing

or just put a 120r in there

I did 95 " on my 2002 FLHTC..S&s gear drive 510g, Se aircleaner,Se ignition system, joker machine pipes, rejetted carb...Runs perfect, but on windy days needs premium fuel or it will ping when working hard in 5th gear on hwy at 60mph.
Sidecars add alot of load to your bike....One of my best thoughts is, just slow down abit and all is kewl...Whats the rush, your riding and enjoying yer rig....
My 2 cents..HB 😉

the reason i suggested a 120r is that they are complete - and will now fit the older frame - and are 5k all in - so when you are looking at 4k to 8k of engine work - you can get the whole engine - and either sell the current engine or keep it so when you sell the bike you keep the big engine and put the bike back to stock

once you are even thinking of putting over 3k in a engine its at least worth a look

I thought of doing a crate engine as well, but I did my motor up before i hacked it...
The part of doing your own motor is the vin # remains the same, as well, mine is a 2002 with the good left side brg in the case...i pressume one would need an oil cooler as well with the 103+ engines as HD did on the solo bikes with those motors...
The 110 engines have alot of heating problems , cylinder warpage etc as is is already from heat, let alone sticking a hack on it...
My 95 perfeorms fine at 60-70 mph, and i really dont need anything faster, but then its all up to ones self what ever turns them on..

Then at times the total cost runs far more than what one originally thought. Ask me how I know this... lol... In hindsight I'd have considered other options but for now I'll put the second 100K on my bike and the first on the factory rebuild. It is what it is.

have your seasoned jugs bored for about 150
Pistons 150
toss in a grunt cam 250-300
100 in gaskets and your good
Its a tractor motor damn-it. You can fix it out of most tool boxes

yes you can go the cheap route

bore and piston to 103 or even 107

255 take off cam - id do the cam before id mess with pistons

tuner

perfect for a sidecar - but zero bragging rights.

when folks talk to spending big bux - do a 120r

for cheap, forget the pipes and air cleaner, on a sidecar it wont matter at all, do a 255 cam and a tuner, if it has blowby do the pistons as big as you dare

remember though - the piston fit is no longer tractor fit - you need torque plates and its a fit in tenths not thousanths - the rest is simple

he's got an 88 not a 96
95 inch is plenty and reliable
piston skirts get to short on larger builds
just my 02

well "plenty" is always the entire issue?

i have a 96 and its plenty - except into a headwind - then its not enough - in heavy traffic in three lanes running 70 you really HAVE to run 70 or go home [sometimes you HAVE to run 80 to not get run over -its just the way it is]

thats exactly where the issue is - i find i end up running in 5th gear in those situations

so far i have not changed anything and really wont plan on it - but when folks start talking about spending money there really are differences in what is worth it.

on a sidecar bike - air cleaner and pipes are a waste of time - never run that high a rpm..

the heavy torque cams, tuned right, will do some good

but bigger cubes is the only real way to make a dent - its also a way to break the engine

take it to a speed shop and they will try and sell stuff that will hurt not help because they are looking at going 100mph - they often dont get it.

the guy listed three options - one was expensive - for that option - the 120r would do a MUCH better job for what he wanted - big torque numbers

still not falling for that line. You WILL feel and A/C, pipes and increased fuel management everytime you pull from a stop sign.
