Does anyone know what HD's manufactures warranty period is-I presume its 12 months?
Thanks

The warranty period on all Harley-Davidson motorcycles and sidecars is 24 months and unlimited mileage. This started with 2004 (that's the year of my Ultra Classic). Their warranty was formerly 1 year or 12,000 miles.

From the looks of that upper mount, it appears that you either live in a Turkish bath or in Florida. LOL

From personal experience, Harley-Davidson is not very sympathetic with regard to situations that involve rust and corrosion. AFAIK, their approach is that since it was NOT corroded when it left the factory so it must be your fault.

People on the West Coast near the Pacific Ocean have the same problem as the East Coast or anywhere that lots of salt is used on the roads in the winter.

Good luck. If you ask for warranty assistance on the corrosion, I'd like to know what they say.

I was interested in the Warranty period as I want to replace the rusty washer on my rig and was waiting to make sure I was out of the warranty period so I don't invalidate the warranty!!!!!!A nice stainless washer would work very well there.
No after the battle to get the Chair replaced, the thought of battling them to get a washer.........There is 4 months left of the Warranty.

My warranty is up in January. I presume it goes from the date that you picked the unit up. If it's only a washer, you are lucky. I know people who have had lots of bolts and spokes corrode.

Let us know what they say if you decide to use your warranty. I've been lucky on my sidecar. No problems.

I would take that off and bead blast it and either have it powder coated again or just hit it with a coat of Rustoleum. It looks like it was extremely wet in a hot, humid climate. That would be Florida.

So when I got back to Dade City this time, and I took the HD cover off the Bike which is stored in a Garage,I found the paint was stained on the edges of the Top Box- Bad Picture enclosed - must try again with the new camera. Any thoughts- the inside of the HD Cover has a white lining.

Paul, in reference to the bolts and washers I think you have a anode, I beleive the parts are made rust resistant useing a zinc base coating and with the frame being ground and in a salty area your the parts are acting as a anode and you getting corrosion BIG time, it was suggested that you get them power coated and that would work BUT the paint/coating would most likely fill the allen heads enough that putting in a wrench would be very hard if not impossible without destroying the coating and the nut on the power coat would most likely penetrate the coating and rust would appear again but not in the large amount you have now, my only suggestion is to get stainless hardware or take the bolts out, clean them and cap them with one of the chrome/polished SS kits available.
BOY,,,I've never seen anything like that, if your wheels are getting white dots on them there going also and if they are let me know, I know a product that will stop that,,,,,after you clean them.

I think I will look out for a stailess washer-17/32 x 1-1/2 x 9/64in, and replace the rusty anode!!.
Now where can I find a stainless washer of this size.

Perhaps you could go to a machine shop. It would be a simple job to make one. It wouldn't cost you much for a washer.

Thanks for that-they do a thinner washer- but if I use 3 of them, it will be the same thickness as the original!

Well I have replaced the rusty washer with 3 stainless washers- but of course the story dosn't stop there the bolt and Nut are very rusty as is the Sidecar brace - the plastic coating is flaking off- see photo.Anyone know of a suitable replacement for the Nut and Bolt- I presume its hardened and therefore you cannot use stainless?
Does anyone do a replacement stainless bolt set for engine/gearbox- the outside ones that is?
Thanks

Wow! You must be in some humid atmosphere there in Fla. The bike must have been stored in an extremely high humidity, salt bearing atmosphere, eh?

As to bolts, you could either order a new one from HD or get a grade 8 zinc-plated replacement from someplace like ACE Hardware. I would not use stainless steel for your sidecar bolt. If used with a stainless steel nut, they will usualy gall.

Stainless steel replacemnt kits are available for all of the smaller screws on Harley bikes online. Dnnis Kirk, J&P, eBay sellers all have them.

I would remove that cross bar and mount and have them bead-blasted and then use some zinc chromate primer and black top coat to re-do them. We can't get zinc chromate here in California anymore due to the tree-huggers and enviro-freaks that run the state now but I bet you could get it in Fla. It's the best for corrosion resistance. Aircraft repair outlet stations would have it.

I would suggest that if you sand blast the frame that you have it powder coated and anything else you can, rust will become a non issue.

Harley has used powder coating on all of their frames for at least the past ten years. There's nothing wrong with doing it again.
