A sidecar is considered an accessory in the US and Canada.
A grocery cart might buy you a ticket since it wouldn't appear to be a safe contrivance on the streets.
There are many scooters with sidecars and many variations of them. If the scooter is legally equipped there is a lot of leeway for an acceptable sidecar. It must appear to be safe at least.

This is one place that has done some for the Vespa type scooter http://sidestrider.com/squire.htm I understand that sidecars are very popular in Italy and some of the other Mediterranean countries where the streets are a lot older and narrower than we are accustomed to here in the states.

Indeed sidecars are NOT popular in Italy. Scooters of all engine sizes and sport bikes are almost the only things you see on the roads except for some vintage collectors that, once a while, take their jewels on the road.

Most people are smart enough to not put a sidecar on anything.
The rest of us will never learn.

The countries of western hemisphere with the most sidecar population for sure are Germany, Russia, Netherland and France.
You see frequently scooter rigs in towns like Hamburg runnig at very moderate speeds.
It is easier to see them at the ice bars....Present yourself and let the people say "Whow!"
(Myself I prefer to have fun riding in the fresh air.)

For your scooter be sure to have minimum 400ccm. Below that you only destroy it unnecesarily.
Get a well done subframe and enjoy!

Myself for a couple of years I had to use a Vespa and can not imagine how to ride a rig where you do not have anything between your legs for to lever when you monkey arround.

There is nothing to comment on tastes, be yourself and feel free realizing your own dreams.
Best wishes and merry chrismas.
