I'm considering acquiring a sidecar mainly so that my wife and I can take our son with us on the motorcycle. I have lots of questions and thought this would be a good place to get started.

Since I live in a state that requires helmets, I'm sure that a kid needs to be at least big enough to where a motorcycle helmet. Anybody have any suggestions on what is a good age for a kid to start riding in a sidecar?

Are there sidecars that are relatively easy to take on/off bike?

Anyone have any suggestions on sidecars that would work well with a Honda VTX 1300 Custom?

Thanks for any input,

Mike

Mike,
They make pretty small sports helmets. A seat belt or childs harness is a good addition for a small child.
Another option is a doublewide so Mom and the boy can both ride in the sidecar.
If attempting to have the child in the sidecar a lot of ballast is needed if Mom wants to ride pillion, for safety's sake.
Here are a couple of options for the VTX1300. Both are mounted without subframes so the bikes can be ridden as a solo without ground interference in the turns if the sidecar is removed.

Thanks for the info, I'll check them out. Usually my wife will want to ride her own bike, so the little guy would be in the sidecar by himself. Can the sidecars be outfitted with anchors to attach a booster seat similar to the way they would be installed in a car?

You don't need to take sidecar on/off bike. Just buy another bike. Also anything can be fabricated if you will pay for it.

Infant and booster seats are easily installed in most sidecars.

Lonnie,

I was checkin' out the pics you put up, the sidecar that's on the '03 vtx... what kind is it? I really like that look. Simple and kinda old school look. I've been lookin' into getting a sidecar for my '02 VTX1800R.

Thanks!

Chris

The '03 VTX 1800 has a URAL Bavarian Classic sidecar. These WWII BMW clones are no longer being imported.
The closest thing we have in stock is a SportMax Euro Classic, which is also an all steel copy of the BMW Military sidecars.
