I'm wondering if there are any laws about which side the sidecar has to be mounted on?

None in the USA. It would be impossible to overtake another vehicle safely with a left-sidecar in the USA and your passenger may strongly object.

Welcome Wookie,

Yes, the problem with sidecars on the opposite side of the local norm is that you have to put significant parts of your rig at risk to see around the vehicle ahead of you when you want to pass. Now, if you are building a rig for say a wheel chaired pilot that will be driving the rig FROM the sidecar, then definitely put the car on the opposite side!

I have mounted a few in the past for owners of kick only bikes but not many.

Also, crown of the road can be an issue for setting up bikes on the "wrong" side. We do make mounts and sidecars for both sides of the bike but that is due to shipping all over the world where some places they do drive on the other side of the road.
