I have a harley sportster towing a freedom cruiser and have been bothered with the handlebar shaking between about 30 to 40 miles per hour. I have purchased a volkswagen strut to mount hoping it will stop the shaking. My question is "What angle do I need to best mount this"? Any help would be much appreciated!

Am real new at this. Appears that Doug has mine at about a 45 degree angle from the centerline of the bike. Hope this helps. Keep on having fun.

The VW steering damper will help with the shake, but if your steering is also heavy, it will not help at all.
A raked tree will be needed to lighten the steering and it will just make the rig feel better. I had a raked tree installed on my Ultra and its a completly different rig now -- all for the better. Its the best $1500 I have ever spent..

If connected to the front fork the best mounting position for the damper is at 90 degrees from the fork angle. This will minimumize any tendency to bump steer if you hit a rough patch in the road.

er....

Art & I have reached the same conclusion. Sidecar appropriate triple trees eliminated the shake for both our rigs. Without a fairing, the Sportster trees are not as difficult to change.

I have a Liberty sidecar on order for my 2005 FLHTC and have considered changing the trees. Has anyone performed this on a electra Glide Classic? If yes, how difficult was it ?

Get your trees from Pete along with the sidecar, you'll be glad you did. No damper will be needede=.

I agree with Lonnie. Pete did my triple tree switch when he mounted my Liberty. No regrets what ever!!

My change of tree on my Ultra was really easy -- paid to have it done. Bought the tree from Liberty. After the tree is changed, remember to lower your headlights or they will shine into the tress

We have tree's for the Sportster $550. We also have a bracket specific for the VW damper to the Sportster. The kit gives you a mount for the bike side of the damper as well as a clamp for around the fork. $150 with out the damper.
