Tug shopping
Been racking my brains looking at bikes locally here which might be pressed into service as a hack tug in the future. Many have come to mind...BMW, some large and medium cruisers, and so on. I've been in all the local moto shops, including a moto dismantler that sells used bikes (not rebuilt!!).
This morning, I went on a very nice winter ride on my (bought and paid for) Vulcan 750. For those who don't know, this is a water-cooled, DOHC V-twin with shaft drive.
The answer is, as usual, right under my nose. I think the VN750 could easily handle a hack. It's got good power and very nice low end grunt, an exposed frame (including what I think are vestigial lugs on the right side for hack mounting). Why am I shopping? This one will, I think, work fine with a Cozy, Velorex or even Ural sidecar.
I'd like to know if anyone has any experience setting up a VN750 with a hack. What kind of car did you use? What was the performance like? Any difficulties in installation? Did you have headshake after the car was put on? Did you install a steering damper?
I know these types of questions have been asked and answered probably a thousand times, but this is where I go to access the knowledge base.
Thanks in advance for any replies...
Bob
Here's one of the last VN750 rigs I put together for a client.
Velorex 562 Cruiser sidecar, no damper, Smooth installation with no head shake. Well balanced outfit with good power. Happy customer.

I put a spffy new Velorex on a VN750 an it worked GREAT. The Velo was a near PERFECT match weight wise for the Vulcan. Power was excellent, handling was excellent. I can't say enough good about what a sweet package it made. Darned shame I didn't take any photos of the rig. Sorry. I'd gladly help you put a hack on your Vulcan if you want though.
Hey Lonnie, other than the color (mine's black and silver), that's my bike! What a GREAT looking rig!!
Other good news from you both that the Velorex is a match for the VN750, with good handling and no headshake.
OK...time to start saving the pennies....Thank you both for the info!
Lonnie, maybe I'll contact you offline, if that's OK...
