BTW, do you guys load your sidecar rigs in reverse on the trailer so that the heavier part is to the front of the trailer? I saw a video where the trailer sways too much if there’s more weight on the back. I found a bear track trailer in fort Myers as well (smaller version).

Ronnie, on my BearTrack BTU82120S trailer,  which several of us have this same model of the BearTrack trailer because we have very wide sidecar rigs, when I first went about positioning my sidecar rig onto the flat bed of this BearTrack trailer,  I  actually measured the tongue height during the positioning process,  and measured tongue weight on my trailer hitch, so that I had the sidecar placed in a position that would be relatively balanced on the single axle trailer, with a slight lean towards the weight of the sidecar being forward  vs rearward...and so that the tongue weight on my trailer hitch was positive weight, vs negative weight, but with not too much positive weight.

I locked my sidecar rig parking brake at that point, then built a tire chock for my front tire on the bike, with the tire chock butted up against the front rail of the trailer bed. This way, anytime I pull my sidecar rig up onto the trailer, I  aim the front tire at the tire chock, bump the front tire into the tire chock, then lock down the sidecar rig with the Honda factory parking brake. Then...obviously...secure the entire sidecar rig with 4 tied owns.

Pulled this trailer almost 7,000 miles from Washington State to Maine and back,  and it never swayed on me....ever.

I strongly encourage you to buy  BearTrack BTU76120S, or a BTU76144S trailer,  hitch it to the back of your Jeep Compass Latitude,  then go find an empty parking lot and learn to drive with a trailer behind you.

The all aluminum trailer will feel like there is nothing behind you,  when it's empty. You may notice a small bit whence you put your  RE / Cozy sidecar rig on the trailer.

After your first 31,415 miles....it will be second nature for you.

Okay,  okay...maybe after just 3,141.5 miles

It took Thane 314.15 miles to be totally comfortable with towing a trailer.

It too Jan Daub 31.415 miles to be totally comfortable towing a trailer.

It took me just 3.14159 miles to be totally comfortable towing a trailer...only because...I like Pi

Eat

However, it only took Bruce in Western Australia 0.314 kilometers to feel comfortable towing a trailer,  because he said he could drive circles around us Yanks.

Razz

@miles-ladue haha ! The life of Pi… or someone that likes pie! 😂

I am planning on driving to https://www.tropictrailer.com/ in fort myers, FL next week to pick up a trailer.

I wish I could drive my sidecar there so every measurement would be perfect.. but of course, I won’t be able to bring the trailer back home.

I was worried that bringing an empty trailer back to Fort Lauderdale might be challenging, but from your response it seems that this might be doable. Once I bring it back to the apartment complex, I’ll park it in the nearby church parking lot, then try out your advice / steps you listed above by following steps listed here ( https://www.curtmfg.com/trailer-parts/couplers/learn-more#:~:text=Begin%20by%20weighing%20your%20vehicle,vehicle%20with%20the%20trailer%20attached.)

Once I’m out of a city, I have no concerns with trailers as I drive them on the ranch… cities and highways are, of course, scary..

Fingers crossed, I solve this towing headache once and for all, thereafter, stop bugging folks here!

…. Can’t wait to find a piece of land in the mountains and live without people or traffic around me.

Thank you all very very much !!!

Ronnie,  when I look at the inventory of the trailer sales place in Fort Myers, they only show two BearTrack trailers, and both of those are too wide...too long...and too expensive for your needs.

Are they bringing the correct trailer in...from another location?

What you need is the BearTrack BTU76120S, which is 10 feet long, or the BTU76144S, which is 12 feet long.

You only need that 12 foot long trailer "IF" you plan to haul your RE/Cozy sidecar AND a 2 wheel motorcycle at the same time.

Frankly,  I would buy the BTU76120S and find peace in life.

Edit: I believe that Tropic Trailer in Fort Myers is getting a  BTU76144S trailer from Harper's trailer sales in Carrollton,  Georgia.

Keep in mind,  Harper's is selling it for $ 3,499.......and they have 5 of the 12 foot long trailers,  but none of the 10 foot trailers.

And....yes...an olde man currently in Saint Aignan,  France can still find trailers in America

Laughing Out Loud

@miles-ladue you da man!!! Are you riding in France as well, and typing while adventuring? You da bomb!!

If I’m spending money on a trailer and learning how to drive it.. I will be getting the 12 feet one. I can’t fall out of practice with 2 wheels as my Himalayas and Andes trips would be dangerous without regular practice..

My plan is to call and find out if they have the 12 foot BTU76144S .. that saves me from driving 8 hours to Carrollton. If they don’t have it in stock, I’ll just drive to Carrollton.

How in the world did you find out that they source from the Georgia location?? Dude!! That’s superpower..

Finally, if I store the two wheeler (84 inches long) kinda at a diagonal, it should fit the BTU76144S which has a Bed Size: 76 inches x 144 inches (6.4 ft x 12 ft)… correct?

Thank you

I like the old ones, but not the new ones. I drove eight hours to take a new one for a test ride a few years ago, it looked great, but the engine had no soul, it buzzed like a chain saw.

@mick-boon Interesting ! I like Royal Enfield just because they look old school.. and I don’t like newer sportsy, ergonomic styles. To my untrained eye, old school bikes look “normal” for someone my age.. the newer, flashy motorcycles make me feel like a punk. From what I hear, the old REs weren’t good machines at all. Apparently, it’s only recently that they got better. I wonder how the old school looking Chinese bikes are.. they look so “proper” to me.

The new RE's  look old school but you can't judge a book by it's cover. They are nothing like the originals.

Define better.

Which Chinese bikes are you talking about ?

Take a good look at an old Royal Enfield Bullet, one with a carb and a separate gearbox.  The old pre unit EFI bikes need more maintenance, but they can be fixed with a wrench at the side of the road.

As for the new  EFI  ( Electronic Fuel Injection ) bikes it's a different engine altogether, they come with a much lighter flywheel , ECU fault codes,  electronic sensors and other gizmos . what a nightmare.

Take a look 🔧 Royal Enfield EFi Fault Codes: Diagnostic Blink Test Classic 500, Bullet 500, Thunderbird, GT 535

They have been deigned to meet emission standards to keep the likes of Greta Thunberg and the rest of the liberals happy, not bikers.

@mick-boon ugh.. I didn’t even know this.. simplicity of fixes - THAT’S precisely what I liked about Royal enfields and me dad’s FIAT (it was a car, back in me dad’s day)… if things break, I could possibly use my “already fried” brains to fix things .. I can’t stand modern machines or technology as, despite being trained as a chemical engineer with strides in advanced degrees like biomedical, civil and environmental engineering etc,  these machines have me dumbfounded..

I had no idea that my INT650 is so complicated. 🙁

I’ve been salivating and doom scrolling/ watching this channel- https://youtube.com/@journey-c4j?si=wfY7HyExMmkupADa .. I know I shouldn’t, but I would LOVE to ride their rigs..

Have sun / rain cover for my kids in the sidecar, pack light (I travel very light anyways) and JUST GO…. anywhere where I can access internet on my phone to work… Imagine proper protection for the kids!! All problems solved.. I’m already in love with sidecar (maybe a bit more than 2 wheelers as I have my kids with me)

This channel is addictive https://youtube.com/@journey-c4j?si=wfY7HyExMmkupADa

EDIT - maybe this channel is fake because I don’t see any website at all.. BUT their sidecars have a REVERSE function!!! OMG 😱

The bikes on the page you like are all made with electronic fuel injection etc.. They are great until they go wrong, then they are crap.    But don't concern yourself about it as you can't buy one anyway, they do not meet US import standards and are unlikely to do so for the next 25 years.

Reverse gear sidecar rigs have been around since 1930 at least, both my CJ's have reverse gear.

PS Chang Jiang's can only be imported into the US if they are 25 years old ( I think ) or older, its 15 years in Canada

Yes.    If you buy a CJ in China for example you will have to make sure the supplier will state that it is at least 25 years old if you want to import it into the US.

Look at this video and note how at the beginning the manufacture date, frame, and engine numbers are highlighted. This shows that the bike is 39 years old basic_smile       New CJ 750 M1M SIDEVALVE

@mick-boon whoa 🤯 man.. I admit that I don’t know automobiles at all… but I had no clue a vehicle more than 25 years old can still run!! On automobile websites, I usually filter for 2020+ (whatever vehicle I’m looking to buy). Cool 😎 education.

So, you bought a 39 year old bike??? And it still runs? looks new?? How do you find bike parts to fix such an old bike? Is anything still manufactured? Do you know how to fix things?
